MemberI have a year-old MacBook running Windows XP Home, SP3 via VMWare Fusion 2.1.
Is there any way, if I am running Windows on that MacBook, that I could connect my Samsung and access the optical disk drive on the MacBook and then insert my Windows Install disk to re-install Windows on the Samsung or is this just way too complicated?
Many thanks,

MemberAlfihar is our resident Apple expert – I’m sure he’ll be able to help you with your question.
I’m afraid I’m Windows and LInux based. The only experience I have of Apple was recommending that my elderly aunts buy a Powerbook each because Apple is sooooo much more user friendly…..oh and yes….I know absolutely nothing about Apple stuff 😉

Yes, this can be setup in the same way as if you were just running a normal Windows computer.[quote1249245175=Speed3]and then insert my Windows Install disk to re-install Windows on the Samsung or is this just way too complicated?[/quote1249245175]
The short answer is no, basically accessing the remote optical drive requires that you are running an operating system (well not always), so you can’t use this method to install an OS (well once again there are ways around this). This would be complex to setup and I’m not sure you would be able to do this with the NC10.One question I have is why do you want to do this?
If all you want to do is reinstall Windows on the NC10, press F4 at the BIOS screen (the one with the Samsung logo), and follow the instructions to install Windows from the hidden recovery partition.
If you have damaged the recovery partition and happen to have a 1GB+ usb memory stick you can use that to reinstall.
1) On the Mac insert the NC10’s Windows disk and the memory stick.
2) Open up Disk Utility.
3) Click on the memory stick, and go to the “Restore” tab.
4) Drag the Windows disk to the Source, and the memory stick to the Destination.
5) Tick erase destination, and click Restore.
You should hopefully then be able to plug in the memory stick into the NC10 and install Windows from it.August 2, 2009 at 9:46 pm #197639Speed3
MemberI really do belong in the Beginner’s forum!
If I do as you say, F4 at the BIOS screen, will this allow me just to restore the Windows software and NOT touch any of the files I have created?
Will is also leave untouched the programs I have installed? I.e., two-fingered scrolling.
What happened was, for some unexplained reason, several programs “disappeared”: Wordpad, Solitaire, and I also found that when I launch the Printers and Fax Control Panel, there is no setup Wizard available…and I am sure there was a week ago when I last launched that CP.
A reinstall is what I would do on a Mac. Is that what is recommended in this instance?
And while I have your attention, if you would, what does one do when one attaches an external HD via the USB connection on the Samsung?
On a Mac, the icon of the external HD appears on the desktop and you can open it, etc.
Many thanks,

Restoring the computer will wipe all your files and applications, the computer will be reset to the state it was in when you finished starting it up for the first time.[quote1249249976=Speed3]What happened was, for some unexplained reason, several programs “disappeared”: Wordpad, Solitaire, and I also found that when I launch the Printers and Fax Control Panel, there is no setup Wizard available…and I am sure there was a week ago when I last launched that CP.

There must be a reason why these have disappeared, it doesn’t sound like a virus or other malware. So I would try to work out how/why it happened and try and fix it.[quote1249249976=Speed3]And while I have your attention, if you would, what does one do when one attaches an external HD via the USB connection on the Samsung?

The hard drive appears in “My Computer”.One thing to note though is if your hard drive is formatted for Mac OSX in HFS+ format then Windows will not be able to read it. The easiest way to have both Windows and OS X read and write to the hard drive is to format it as FAT32.

[/quote1249263559]I formatted the drive in the iMac and when I get its properties, it is identifed as (DOS)FAT32.
When I go to “My Computer”, it does not show; only the C and D drives show.
When I open System Properities and go to Hardware tab then click on Device Manager then navigate to Disk Drives, there it is, identified as ST38011 A USB Device.
Double clicking on it reveals, under the General Tab, a notice stating “This Device is working properly.”
Why won’t is show up under My Computer???

ParticipantIf you look at the drive in Disk Utility, what Partition Map Scheme is the drive using?
Windows will work with Master Boot Record and should work with GUID, though I’m not sure about Apple Partition Map.
