MemberHi guys:
Can anybody help me with this? My wife has an NC20 and I convinced her of installing win7 and putting 2GB of RAM to make it faster. The problem is that after spending that money the netbook is still sluggish.
Can be a problem the RAM i bought? Dows anybody have a tip to speed it up? I always read good things about this netbook, but mine is not fast, is actually really slow. BTW, I have installed all the lastest drivers (I think)
Thanks for your help

MemberHmmm I’ve not used that one. Anyone else use Sophos? How much of a drain on the system is it?

MemberIt’s easy enough to turn off your antivirus, whatever it is, and see if it makes a difference.
Your description of your NC20 as “sluggish” is not very informative. Sluggish compared to what? Also, I infer that you considered it sluggish before you upgraded it. Is it possible that you are just expecting a bit too much from a machine which is, after all, very modest in terms of performance?
I upgraded my NC20 to 2GB (but retained XP) and I can honestly say that it made no difference whatsoever. This is a low-powered machine and it does everything slower than my other laptop with its dual-core processor. That includes starting up, loading applications and opening web pages. You need to keep the machine lean and mean – even running a desktop clock uses 2% of cpu resources. If you don’t use services, turn them off. Don’t use multiple active security systems – for example, I use Spybot in addition to Avast! antivirus, but I don’t use its real time scanner. I turn off the touchpad when I use a mouse, kill the ethernet service as I only use wireless, don’t keep multiple accounts active at the same time, close applications when I’ve finished with them, use Abiword instead of OpenOffice, and don’t expect to do any video editing! For web browsing, email, photo viewing, playing music, watching videos (with the right media viewer), the NC20 is fine, though not all at the same time. Personally, I see little reason to upgrade to W7 as XP suits the machine very well, though if it was possible to dual boot Ubuntu or Mint without jumping through hoops, I might well give it a try.

MemberPavron, memory speed will make no noticeable difference and in fact these netbook motherboards are only capable of running lower speed memory (high speed RAM works but will simply run at the lower speed).
As said above, it is more likely to be a factor of what you are running/trying to do. Switching to Chrome certainly helped speed up my browsing for example.
