MemberHmm i can get SDHC4GB Cards for less than 7 bucks…
6x4GB = 24GB for less than 42 Euros.
Only Problem i see is that they are using RAID0 so if only one card bites the dust…

MemberI saw one of those in the computer store around me. Or at least a very similar one. It’s a great, really cheap, idea; at the store the enclosure only cost around $30.

MemberI would love to see this thing benchmarked for speed and power drain.

MemberThe Website says it consumes 5V/150mA
They even have another type with 8 Slots and (according to the german distributor) 1 GB DRAM-Cache for faster random writes.
As soon as they release a 8 Slot Case with RAID5 i’m sold.

MemberI don’t get what the advantage would be!? I mean as a space upgrade its just not practical. Stock HDD is 160GB. For 256GB you’ll need 8 x 32GB SD cards. They are about £80 each! £640! No thanks!
Now when the price of 32GB SD cards drop to below £10 a piece (which will happen eventually) then this piece of kit will be a bargain!

ParticipantSpeed and no noise would be two advantages.
A RAID0 of 6 SD cards should be pretty quick.March 21, 2009 at 2:23 pm #187137Airwolf

[/quote1237645280]150MA = 1.8 watts
You can get laptop hard drives that consume half that such as the 4200 RPM Hitachi’s.
Eh…….

MemberGreat product, but it’s just not undercutting ssd enough. Ive found an american site (http://www.shopdigi.com/product.aspx?pf_id=CR-) that have the drive, at the moment its $125.00 ( about £86 ) then add on your ssd cards and your looking at the same price as a ocz solid/vertex series ssd. When sdhc cards come down in price and we get a cheaper version of this drive then it would be worth it. As i said before though, looks to be a good product, one to keep an eye on.

MemberThe main reason why i brought this up is because with ongoing development this kind of products might become pretty awesome.
Imagine they would release a 8 Slot Version with 1GB Cache-Buffer and RAID5.
Let’s say you get 10 SDHC Cards for cheap (Like the 4GB SDHC Cards which cost around 7 Euros at the moment) and you stick 8 of them into the device. The remaining 2 would be spare parts.
As soon one of the cards becomes faulty you just replace it, tell the raid controller to repair the array and you are good to go.
Something you can’t do with a regular SSD… a array of fast, cheap flash memory repairable by yourself.

MemberThanks Don for that explanation. Sums up the benefits perfectly. Its an interesting product to keep an eye on its development, that is for sure. But again, largely depends on the prices of flash memory dropping.
For me though, until I can match or better the amount of space that comes as standard with the NC10 for a reasonable price, I couldn’t justify losing valuable GB, and the only way to do that is have 8 32GB cards, which are just far too expensive at the moment.
Now, if enough people were interested here, and we organized a bulk purchase of SD cards… 😀

MemberNo vibration is another reason to get it, some of the 7200 RPM drives vibrate quite a bit.

MemberI almost pulled the trigger on this, I found a site that sold it for £57 shipped. But then I thought, wait, by the time 32GB SDHC cards become cheap enough a regular SSD will be just as cheap. You can get a 32GB Runcore 2.5 SATA for $99US.
How ever the advantage of the photofast one is it’s expandable, but as has been mentioned, need to be RAID5 so when a card become corrupt you can swap it out. And of course who’s to say you can’t add 64GB cards in the future.March 22, 2009 at 9:48 am #187127Britman
Memberohhh and another down side, you’ll need some sort of SSD cradle so you can add your cloned HDD. The Runcore ones had a usb connection to make this process a breeze.

MemberThe only reason for me getting an SSD in a laptop would be for power consumption. This is interesting but doesnt seem to be all that great in the wattage dept.
