MemberBeen using my samsung NC10 for a number of years then all of a sudden it will not boot. It gets to the Windows XP splash screen and stops. I have tried:
– safe mode; will run until loading MUP.SYS then stops.
– reset to earlier good config: No change
– F4 recovery: – Samsung Recovery Soln: – Gets to Samsung splash screen and stops.
– Using the memory diagnostic gives error that the application is missing
– Using Samsung recover disk on external CD – gets to Windows splash screen and stops.
– removed HD and ran again but still only gets to Splash screen
– reset Bios to defaults – no change
– swapped Ram out for known good set – no change
– followed suggestion in another thread to read the guide on general answers for boot problems @ “Windows XP won’t Boot” but nothing for this case?Anything else?
Thanks

MemberThanks,
Tried the CMOS reset and pretty much same results
– Safe boot loads as far as MUP.SYS
– Normal Boot loads as far as Splash screen and stops
– Boot from external CD with recovery disk loads a lot of drivers then stops at “Setup is Starting Windows”October 28, 2011 at 4:15 pm #220556Bobthemonkey
MemberAs it does not want to go pass the initial Windows boot does this mean it is only getting as far as the BIOS hand off and that problem is with CPU or motherboard?
Thanks

ParticipantBobthemonkey – It does sound a bit like a hardware issue perhaps it’s caused by a corrupt bios.
Is this happening on battery/mains/both?
When you enter the bios is the hdd recognised correctly?
Are you sure that the hdd is good?
Try another cmos reset
Try running a bootable usb live linux distro (eg. Ubuntu Netbook Remix)Hope this helps

MemberI continue to have same problem on both battery and mains.
– The bios does recognised the HDD correctly
– did a CMOS reset again
– I removed the HDD and installed it in an external case in which I can read all files fine. I reformated to NTFS and installed an new OS while it was in external case. No change
– removed RAM and replaced with another set – no change
– Installed another HDD and attempted to reload new XP Pro from CD. Process went as far a “Setup Starting Windows” and then it stopped.-everything I try seems to get as far as loading windows then stops.

MemberWould you say it freezes/stops after around the same time scale?? it could be possibly over heating? you could strip the laptop down to the motherboard and clean any dust etc from the fan, heat sink etc- if you are a smoker or there are smokers in the home you will be surprised to the about of gunk gathers blocking the fan etc I would also suggest possibly swapping out the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu as it goes hard and very ineffective with time.
