MemberHi,
I have a perfectly working NC10 KA01DK. I’ve had it more than a 1 year now and is very happy with it and it works just fine for me. Now one of my friends asked me if I have updated the firmware, bios etc.. Ehh – No I haven’t – why should I – there is nothing wrong with my sammy.. Yes Yes my friend said, but your Sammy will work much better when updated..!
So now is my question. What exactly will be the benefit of upgrading my soft/firmware, bios etc…? What will I gain and what will improve..?
Is it worth upgrading or is this just for “Sammy Nerds” (no offence 😉

MemberIn theory yes. Updates to BIOS and firmware should improve performance. To be honest, the only real improvement I’ve noticed was one update to the BIOS about 8 months ago. That gave me a nice jump in peformance (improvement to streamed video); so make sure you’ve got the latest version of the BIOS. Other than that, nothing of real note.
Would anyone disagree?
You’re losing nothing by updating every now and then though. It doesn’t cost anything – and you might get an improved machine.

MemberBIOS updates often don’t improve performance on existing, working systems. For example, the last couple BIOS updates for my main computer only added recognition for newer processors; they did nothing for my already working computer. Some updates focused on bug fixes for problems I wasn’t having. Unfortunately, Samsung has been pretty bad about telling us what’s changing in each BIOS update, which makes it harder to decide if any particular update is worth it.
FWIW, I’ve taken the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” approach for my laptops. On my NC10, for example, I think I’ve updated the BIOS once and the drivers not at all. The BIOS update changed nothing as far as I can tell.
On my home-built computers I tend to keep things updated, if only for games and potential future upgrades. (I rarely change processors without changing the motherboard, but you never know.)
Either way, good luck!

ParticipantJanS – The latest bios 11CA for the NC10 has Win 7 support and allows the cursor keys to control the brightness. Apart form that I’ve not noticed any real improvements.
If you are not planning a move to Win 7 and your NC10 is running fine then IMHO there is no need to upgrade the bios or the drivers.
I too adopt the stance if it ain’t broke don’t fix it unless you see a driver with tangible benefits that will improve your stable system.
Hope this helps

MemberOk, thanks for your replies. I think I also will stick to “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. At least for now.
