MemberHi!
I’m new here and having problems with my standard NC10.
This morning it was working fine, I closed the lid and left it alone for about 5 hours.
When I came back to it, it would not recover or boot – at least, the screen remains black.
The blue light comes on and the hard disk makes a suitable noise but the screen remains defiantly black.
I’ve tried Fn+F4 (with and without an external monitor)
I’ve tried unplugging it, removing the battery and leaving it for 30 minutes and then rebooting with and wid agin without the battery attached
I’ve tried unplugging it, removing the battery and repeatedly pressing the ‘on’ button for over 2 minutes and then putting the battery back and rebooting.
I’ve even tried installing ubuntu netbook onto a usb drive and booting from that (though I have no idea if it tried to boot from that or not as it was, obviously, silent.I also reseated the memory.
The on/off button/light seems to work fine, the charger works (orange light turns green) just nothing on the screen – and so no idea if its working or not.
Is there anything else I should try before I take my precious nc10 back to Currys and wave goodbye to all my data?
Cheers

ParticipantTaDa – Welcome to the forum
Have you tried a bios reset or a cmos reset?
It could well be stuck in hibernation.Try this blind if your screen is blank.
[F2] at boot for the Samsung Logo screen to enter system bios setup, and press [F9] (Load Setup Default) then press [F10] (Save and Exit). Leave a pause between each keystroke and then re-boot.To reset the cmos short out the RTC RESET pins on the motherboard under the ram module with a small screwdriver and then re-boot. More details here
Hope this helps

MemberThanks jeepers01 – I’ve tried both (repeatedly) all to no avail.
The hdd cranks up like it means business, the lights come on but I cannot see anyone at home 🙁
I had to break the plastic cover over the RTC reset pins – have I now just invalidated my warranty? Hey ho!

ParticipantTaDa – Have you tried running with an external monitor? [Fn] + [F4] to toggle screens.
At least that way you could see to back up your data and also check out the screen display settings.
Try also [Fn] + [F5] as the display may be switched off.
Hope this helps

MemberYup 🙁 Tried them too – still blank screen (nc10 and external)
To me its beginning to look like the graphics card has gone – is this a known problem?
(Thanks for your followup replies)

MemberOk,So last Friday evening I rang the 0835 number for Samsung netbook support (sorry mislaid the number but it was on another post – I just noted that the sheet detailing the repairs undertaken provides the number 0845 7267864for “Samsung Technical Support”).
I was on hold for 30 minutes (I’m glad I avoided the 03.. number)
I finally got through to a support guy.
He got me to try rebooting it but repeatedly press the F2 key to force it to go into the BIOS boot screen.
As soon as this failed (we tried twice) he said it would be picked up on Monday.
On Tuesday we got a text message from a company called DPD saying they’d pick it up at lunchtime (not Monday but it was quicker than I feared and I did not need to hassle anyone to come pick it up)
When they came lunchtime they picked it up and put it in a nice carry box.
Today I got it returned!!
No fee (well, I only bought it in January) and they claim to have replaced the motherboard and updated the BIOS.All I can say is that it does, now, boot with a working screen.
Hoorah!
Now for the really interesting bit…
I had my ‘life’ on that netbook with the most recent backup being 4 weeks old (!!!!).
I asked the support guy if there was any way to get the data off my hard drive lest they decided to replace the whole unit.
He advised me to take the hard disk out and put it in another machine!!
I asked him if this would invalidate the warranty and he asked ‘how can we tell?’
He then told me I had to take out _all_ the screws on the base and even suggested I got an external SATA enclosure to do the job.I was pretty sure they would kick up a stink but I went for it anyway for fear of losing my data.
Carefully noting where each of the 14 screws came from (not 15 as mentioned in another post and no, there isn’t one under the memory slot) and gently pried the cover apart using a credit card.
I took the hard drive out, put it in my SATA capable desktop, transferred my data and then put it all back together again. So, all in all, a relatively pleasurable result all round (other than the loss of my nc10 for a week of course)
Cheers all and I hope the knowledge that you _can_ take the drive out before returning the nc10 (and, indeed, unscratching the plastic over the CTC pins under the memory card) does not stop Samsung support honouring their warranty.
Well, at least, they did for me – good luck!

ParticipantTaDa – Glad it’s all fixed and thanks for taking the time to report back.
It’s always nice to close out an issue on a positive note 🙂
