I have just received a Black NC10 SE that i would like to give to my daughter for her 10th birthday next month . I have followed many of the recommendation’s on this forum in an attempt to create the perfect little machine for her growing mind . Does anyone have any specific recommendations for software or applications to make her 1st PC even better ?
Also I am using rocketdock , how do I get the redundant icons off the desktop ? The recycle bin will not except them .many thanks , Potscrubber

MemberHi potscrubber, Welcome to the forum! If you are having problems removing any icons from the desktop i.e the Bluetooth icon trying using the Desktop cleanup tool. “”Right click on desktop >> Properties >> Desktop Tab >> Customize Destop >> Clean Desktop Now”” You can then select the stubborn icons on your desktop and select next, then finish. The selected icons will then be added to a new folder which will appear on you desktop. Simply drag that folder to your recycle bin or highlight folder and delete. Then delete from recycle bin.. Job done.. I probably went in to too much detail there!! 🙂 Hope that helped though!

Memberwelcome potscrubber,
Google “free children’s ******* ” (where ***** could be games, books, etc) to get a listing of free games, books, e-books, audiobooks, drawing programs, etc.
Though she is only 10 years old downloading the free suite http://www.openoffice.org will allow her to compose letters, construct drawings and so forth. I was amazed at what my 7 year-old granddaughter could do with some of these computer programs.
A program I downloaded for my granddaughter was http://www.kidsnumber.com , which has a quite a few numbers-oriented games for kids. Good luck

MemberIf she’s not going to be able to get web access from wherever she is, search around here for the means to download some (or all) of Wikipedia to use it offline. Can’t remember the names of the tools offhand, there’s at least 2. You download the program and a dump of the most recent Wikipedia set you want (and there is a relatively small “schools” set of the most useful 15,000 or so articles).
Put the two together et voila – an offline encyclopaedia, about the size of what, 15 volumes of books, permanently available on her NC10 for homework, study, answering difficult questions you don’t know the answers to… ;O)
(I think one or more of the tools to do this doesn’t include the images though, so bear that in mind.)
