MemberMy NC10 is reporting that “a network cable is unplugged” even though a network cable IS plugged, and I am unable to access my home network or at work. It was connected to my home network in the morning, I turned it off and took it to work, then when I turned it back on and plugged in the cable there it didn’t even notice. Everything related to the ethernet port in device manager, etc, reports it as having no problems and everything being just fine. I tried reinstalling the driver and that didn’t do it, I tried rolling back the driver and that didn’t do it. My wireless ethernet is fine, the problem is I don’t have wireless at home or work, just my neighbors’.
I’m running a clean install of Windows 7 (not an upgrade), 1 sad and lonely GB of RAM, I dunno what else is important.
Any ideas?
I’ve tried searching the webs but I can’t seem to find anyone with the same problem. Maybe my port just died on the walk to work? There were no jolts or bumps to it, I carry it in a well padded backpack.

MemberIt could be the NIC has failed, I guess its possible. Is the cable a def good one? have you tried another cable?
A quick google gives a few links – http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=%22network+cable+is+unplugged%22+even+though+a+network+cable+is+plugged+in&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
A couple of suggestions seem to be a complete power down and battery removal, i.e:
1.) Shut dowm your PC.
2.) Unplug the power cord.
3.) If you have a laptop, remove the battery as well.
4.) Walk away from the problem for at least 30 minutes.
5.) When you return, reconnect battery and power cord.
5.) Start as usual.or setting the speed on the link as opposed to auto configuration, i.e. along the lines of:
Open device manager
-Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
-System Properties window should open, click on the Device Manager button under the Hardware tab.Device Manager should now be open.
-Find the controller under the Network Adapters.
-Double click the controller to open its properties window.
-click on the Advanced tab (This is where you can change the speed and duplex settings).
-Select Speed & Duplex on the left side of the window (you should see its current setting (Auto)towards the right side of the window on the Value drop-down).
– Click on the drop-down and select a setting other than Auto (Try fastest and then slowest) and then click OK to close the window.Hope one or other may help, if not post back.
Maybe it may be worth double checking this first, but what about removing the NIC from device manager (delete/remove it) and reboot. I believe Windows should then redetect and reinstall it.

MemberPossibly stating the obvious – but did you try a different Ethernet cable… If when rolling it up to take to work, one of the thin wires broke – then, it would appear to be NOT connected to the computer.

MemberI tried multiple ethernet cables, one of which my coworker was using with no problems, so I know it’s not the cables.
I shall try everything else suggested and let you know what happens

Memberapparently I suck at Google because all I could get were results from official pages/reviews mentioning the NC10’s ethernet port or people who were annoyed by “a network cable is disconnected” messages when their network cables were actually disconnected.
Anyway, unplugging everything and walking away has solved the issue. Thanks very much!
