MemberI’ve got a 10 month old NC10 which I recently decided to install OSX on. Knowing the wireless wouldn’t work I decided I could use the Ethernet before purchasing a replacement WI-FI card. However I was unable to get Ethernet working in OSX, it simple said no cable connected (it was, and had been tested with another PC), no lights lit up on the port either.
I restored back to Windows thinking it could be a driver issue, and I’m getting the same problem there too. Having always used WI-FI, I think this is probably the first time I’ve connected it to my wired network (i know I’d actually disabled the port in the BIOS previously). Is there anything I can do, or, as I suspect is the more likely answer, am I going to have to send it back under warranty.
Thanks

Participantballen – Welcome to the forum
Are you sure you have the correct network settings?
Try connecting direct to the router. If changing drivers, ensuring that no Windows services are disabled and the LAN is reported as working in Device Manager then it sounds like a hardware fault to me.
Hope this helps

MemberHi there, I’ve been through the same osx installation / windows re-installation myself, and the same “uh-oh, I think I’ve broken it” feeling!
I’m fairly sure it needs a chipset driver and then lan driver installation.
As the OP has alternative internet access, I’d suggest downloading the driver update packages from the samsung support website – I transferred them via USB drive, reinstalled them all one by one and after a re-boot the ethernet worked as is I’d never gone tinkering in the first place.
Samsung driver downloads are available from the link.
Hope this helps 🙂

MemberThanks guys.
I’m not sure I’ve ever connected it to the Ethernet so have no idea whether it’s ever worked. I tried doing a network boot (F12 on start up) and even that said no cable was connected (and this is before any OS drivers get involved). Also the Windows ‘re-installation’ was a restore from the backup partition which was created when I first booted the netbook, so I’d have thought any drivers should have already been in place.
It’s getting picked up today so I guess we’ll see what Samsung have to say, thanks for the help though.

MemberI got it back today, apparently they’ve replace the motherboard, although much to my dismay it still didn’t work. I then went into the room with the router and plugged it in with a short patch cable and it worked fine.. tried the wall socket in my room, also worked, went via the hub in my room.. nothing.. despite using a cable that I’d just removed from my xbox (which connected fine). The short answer is, the NC10 doesn’t seem to work with the Gigabyte Mini Switch (GS-SW005) I have. I dug out an old wireless router I had and am using that just as a wired switch and its working fine.
Very annoyed I didn’t try that before – the switch was working fine with other devices so it didn’t really occur to me. The switch itself was powered by a USB port, so I’m wondering if the NC10’s port is fairly low powered and there just wasn’t enough there to get it working.
Bit of a hassle but glad I’ve got everything working okay now, and the Samsung warranty was great. Thanks for the help everyone.

Participantballen – Glad it’s all sort of resolved now and at least the root cause has been established.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, hindsight is a wonderful thing – just wish we were all blessed with it 😀Thanks for the feedback.
