MemberStupidly I managed to put my netbook in my bag without the thing switching off fully. I *did* set it to shut down and closed the lid, like I usually do, except this time I put it in the case, which I don’t usually do. Anyways, I tried to use it about ten mins ago and it refused to turn on, but its…er…hot. To put it mildly. Not raging inferno hot, but decidedly warm. There’s no telltale smell of burning plastic, however.
There wasn’t all that much battery left so I’m crossing fingers that it just ran out, but I don’t have the AC with me to check.
Does anyone have any experiences with severe accidental overheating like this? Is it likely to be fixable?
Now I really want this class to be over to test it 🙁

MemberI expect there is some mechanism in the NC10 (as nearly every motherboard made in the past 8 years has) to switch off if the cpu becomes overheated, so it shouldn’t have become too hot, as there is some margin between switch off temp and damage temp.
I noticed that with my nc10, if I shut down and close the lid before windows is actually shut down, it will switch to stand by instead (even though I specified in windows that closing the lid should trigger no action). Maybe that’s what happened to you as well? Best thing is to just wait a bit until it cooled down and see. If it has completely run down your battery, it should not have reached critical temperature yet, so in that case I expect you should not be in trouble either.

MemberI’ve left mine on in a bag several times and notice it get very toasty. To date it has lived to tell the tale – of course that’s just my experience and I wouldn’t recommend it!

MemberHi all,
Thanks for the replies, I just got home and tried plugging it in and it purred to life seemingly none the worse for the bad treatment. Perhaps a good warning to me to always leave it to shut down before shutting the lid. I was remembering on the way home a couple of times where I would hear it mysteriously whirring under my bed late at night when I hadn’t let it shut down properly. Lesson learned 🙂January 29, 2010 at 10:36 am #209997tonytb
