MemberI am contemplating buying a netbook, and one of the Sammys will probably be my choice. N210, N220, or NB30. I’ve read the thread “Any one bought an NB30 yet ??”, with input from SouthWater, thestormtrooper, and others, which is very encouraging.
However, it’s still hard to tell what the differences are between them. The NB30 is “tough”, which suits my usage. Such a spec usually adds to the price, but the NB30 seems to be the cheapest of the group. Why ? What more do I get if I buy the 210 or 220 ? I would add that 160 GB is ample hard disk for me.
My anticipated usage is for field notetaking, holding the netbook on my left forearm, and typing with my right hand. Does anyone else do this ? Is it practicable ?
Does anyone know if any of the suppliers will sell one of these Sammys with 2 GB of RAM, or will I have to install this myself (and have a surplus 1GB RAM module). Will the extra 1GB of RAM reduce the battery time very much ?
Thanks.April 11, 2010 at 10:15 pm #212624jeepers01
ParticipantSnappa – Welcome to the forum
The N220 appears to have the Broadcom HD decoder fitted but Samsung specs do not seem to highlight this feature, which you may find useful. If could be that it is only fitted in models for certain markets but AFAIK it is fitted in the UK N220’s.
More info in this thread
Hope this helps.

MemberThanks Jeepers. Video decoders don’t really excite me either. Seems like the NB30 is the one to go for.
Does anyone have any comment on my questions about the way I will be using the NB30, and the memory upgrade ?
Thanks.

MemberLove my NB30. I run Ubuntu 9.10 primarily so I don’t have any problem with the 1 Gb RAM issue.

The left hand end will then nestle into the elbow joint and it seems quite a secure method of holding the sammy for the purposes you have in mind. To confirm that, it would be an idea to pop into a shop and try it out before purchasing, just to satisfy yourself.

I don’t think the extra 1GB of ram will make any difference to the battery time or if it does it will be so small as to be immeasurable in normal use.
Hope this helps

MemberHi all,
I used to have an NC10 which I loved to bits, but it was stolen when our house was burgled. The insurance company say they can’t replace it because it’s too old; they’re offering an NB30 instead. I wondered if you could give me some advice on any differences between the two.Specifically:
* OS. I’ve seen conflicting information about this on the web. If it ships with XP, that’s fine.
* Screen. Is it gloss or matte? I haven’t been able to find anything out about this. I really want a matte screen to avoid glare.
* Keyboard. The biggie. I chose the NC10 mainly for the keyboard so I’m very wary about the new chiclet keys. Do they feel all rubbery like calculator keys?
* Mousepad. How does the multi-touch work? I used to run TwoFingerScroll on the NC10; as long as it works similarly that’s fine.April 24, 2010 at 11:27 am #212631Snappa
MemberLaptops Direct
Anyone had any experience with Laptops Direct ? I have sent them two of their eMessages asking about the differences in two of their NB30s. NP-NB30-KA01UK cost £247.76. Also the NP-NB30-JA02UK which costs £298.20 First message was three weeks ago. Second one just a couple of days ago. No reply to either !!April 24, 2010 at 12:02 pm #212627jeepers01

Hope this helps

MemberThanks again Jeepers. Yes I had seen that the hard disks and OS are different. Would this account for the £50 price difference ? I’d also like to know if there are subtle differences like screen and/or keyboard which are different.
Yes, I could ring them up (10 p per min), but if this is typical of their respect and support for customers, I’d rather go elsewhere. Do they want my business or not ? Hence the question asking about others’ experiences. Thanks again.April 25, 2010 at 8:33 am #212636hooper

* It runs XP.
* Matte screen
* Keyboard is noticably worse. The chiclet keys themselves are ok, but they’ve messed with the size of some of them; the arrow and fn keys are noticably smaller.
* Haven’t tried out the multi-touch mousepad yet
* The case is ok, but the power switch is irritating.
* USB/audio ports have swapped sides for some reasonMay 2, 2010 at 7:31 pm #212637CCrespo
MemberI had bought a NB30 last week, and so far i am very happy with it (this one was bought in Portugal, it’s a 250GB model with 1 GB Ram, Windows 7 Starter PT).
Take into account that a netbook will never be a “desktop replacement” i found this unit more than adequate to be “mobile companion”.
In particular, i like the keyboard and the screen, i have seen worst keyboards in full-size notebooks! The rubber finish is also a nice touch – and give this unit a more “professional” look than others.
There is only one thing that i would like to have: builtin 3G as standard (an in fact there is a plastic tab on the right side of the unit, with a small hole near – it could be the place to SIM Card holder in future models???); it’s not very safe to have a 8 cms 3G dongle plugged in when you move the NB30 around.Snappa take care: holding the NB30 with one hand, and typing with the other will put your shoulder in stress – may be you don’t feel it at the begining but this can lead you to serious problems in the future.

ParticipantCCrespo – Welcome to the forum
Most 3G dongles come with a short USB extension lead which can help alleviate the protrusion problem 🙂
