MemberHi all, I’ve just purchased a N220, and I’m considering blitzing the Windows 7 starter edition pre-installed and replacing it with a full version.
I have a few questions wghich I’m hoping can be answered.
firstly before I start to do this, is it worth replacing the OS?
secondly if I do, which would be better for the machine 32-bit or 64 bit? (does it support 64bit? as I would prefer to use this if I can)
Cheers in advance

MemberWhitehart, welcome to the forum.
I remained with W7 Starter on my N220, but there are some posts around like http://www.sammymobile.com/forum/threads/13792-N150-LCD-Backlight-Constant-under-Windows-7-x64 and http://www.sammymobile.com/forum/threads/13888-N150-Win7-x64-drivers-anyone for an N150 which is a similar spec machine which seem to suggest it can be done.
Not having tried it myself, it seems the main issue is getting hold of the right/working drivers and Samsung special software such as Easy Display Manager, plus I believe Samsung are reluctant to support a 64 bit ‘non standard’ OS on the machine should you need it.
I daresay someone who has installed 64bit will let you know how it went soon enough.
But may I ask why you want 64 bit? I thought the main advantage was to use more than 4G of RAM, and these netbooks are limited to 2G – or so I thought. Just curious.
If you just want to update starter for tweaking options, a lot can be filled in starter with 3rd party free apps, such as VLC/GOM for DVD playback, TrueCrypt for file encryption, Oceanis for wallpaper and this for general tweaking (for examples).
Hope some of that helps.

MemberAs soon as I got mine I stuck Win7 32 bit on it.
Download the drivers from the Samsung website and you’ll be fine, be careful with Windows Update though as the updated graphics driver it wants to put on will stop the brightness buttons working, as far as I have found that is the only problem with Windows Update, other than that everything else is fine.

Membercheers every for your input, reserching it looks like 64 bit drivers will be a nightmare so as suggested I may install standard win 7 on the machine

MemberYeah mines 32 bit Win7 Pro, I dont see the point in going 64bit unless you have a specific peice of software that needs it.

MemberDecided to stick with Starter in the end, if this machine was for me I would have put pro on, but seeing as its a xmas present for my other half I dont think she’ll notice much difference, and if she does then I’ll upgrade it after xmas

MemberHello there!
I hope I can borrow this thread as creating a new seems redundant.
I just got a N210 (the same as N220 besides the color options I think?), and the Win7 with all the crap Samsung put on it is driving me nuts!
I’d like to completely blast it clean and put Win7 Ultimate (or possibly WinXP although support seems to be missing) with only the bare minimum of drivers and extras – no bells and whistles. Are there any risks or losses to doing this?
What are the bare minimum drivers/extras I need to get my N210 working nicely?
I really just want the connectivity, multi-gesture pad and function buttons. -
