MemberCan anyone tell me in simple terms what the advantage of Windows 7 over XP will be. I am just about to purchase a N140 from Dixons – who by the way have a 5% discount at the moment – and wondered if I should go ahead with this although it has XP or wait for a bit until windows 7 is released. Or can I install windows 7 onto this machine and if so how easy is it to do?
So many questionsCheers

MemberYou can install Windows 7 straight away. No network drivers are installed from the Win 7 install so have them downloaded and saved to the “D” drive first. Get them from the Samsung site. As mentioned here on the forum WIndows 7 drivers from a link to Realtek do not work, they have not been released yet and point to incorrect network cards.
Install and run from XP the Belarc (http://www.belarc.com) advisor and print or save the resulting document, you might need the info later.Win 7 can be installed to a (4GB) bootable USB flash drive again info from these forums.

MemberThanks for any help anyone can offer:
I’m writing from America and here, the n140 is being offered only with Win7. I am reluctant to purchase the model because, although it appears to be a bettter hardware choice than the nc10, I greatly prefer XP.
Can anyone help with finding XP drivers for a win7 OEM n140? I’m pretty ignorant.October 28, 2009 at 12:57 pm #203124Juhani
MemberMost probably yes as the N140 has also been shipped with XP, you can easily check out Samsung’s website for drivers.
Double posting the same question is ignorant too.
edit: Here’s a link for you, took like a minute to find this

MemberJuhani:
thanks; please excuse my double posting, that was a mistake, i understand that now. Thought perhaps the question would get lost on the wrong thread. Again, apologies- and thanks very much for the help. I’lve followed the link you provided. Just wonder if drivers for the UK issue of the 140 will match those required for the US issue.
Again, apologies and thanks for helpful reply.October 28, 2009 at 6:49 pm #203120jeepers01
ParticipantIf you choose the N140 Samsung downloads they will be suitable from both the UK and USA sites.

MemberThanks again, Jeepers.
That settles that, then.
II’ll buy the model with win7, partition, and add XP with drivers from UK site. Now, I am told i need to get a dedicated OEM XP version; that just any XP clean disk is not going to work?October 28, 2009 at 8:48 pm #203121jeepers01

You can buy genuine XP with service pack 3 for around £35 but shop around, it does not have to be an OEM version.October 29, 2009 at 12:38 am #203129pretty ignorant
MemberTHanks once more, Jeepers.
Problem solved : buy the n140 with win7; partition the hard dirve; buy an XP disk; then, load the XP drivers from the UK Samsung site, onto the American version of the 140
Giving the reassurance of having XP; and being able to test drive 7.
I fear i have intruded on sco0ts, though, as sco0ts started this thread with a question asking what advantage win7 may offer over xp for his/her type of usage.October 29, 2009 at 7:18 pm #203119ThisIs2009
MemberI was in my local Carphone Warehouse today, picking up some brochures for my homework. However, I got distracted by a Samsung N140 with a Toshiba netbook to the right of it, and a Dell netbook above it. The Dell netbook was running Windows XP Home Edition, but I was really shocked to find that the Samsung N140 and the Toshiba netbook were running Windows 7 STARTER! It looked SO limited and stripped out compared to Windows XP Home Edition on the Dell netbook.

MemberExactly my concern. I was thinking hard between N140 Win XP or Win 7. But with just the Win 7 Starter Edition, my decision was made and I bought N140 with Win XP.

MemberOne concern related to removing win7 [the only version available in US comes with win7 installed] and installing XP on the n140- won’t one then lose all the function key programs that come with the version as purchased with win7?
Does anyone know a work around, by which one may preserve the bundled Samsung programs/function key functionality- and still refromat and install XP?
I’m pretty ignorant.
Thanks.[As an aside, as suggested elsewhere in this thread, I did email Samsung U.S, asking confirmation that the drivers for the n140 XP model as sold in UK would work with the Samsung n140 win7 model as sold in US. Their “helpful” answer was that they cannot answer about models sold outside the US.!]
