MemberToday my SSD arrived and I eagerly put it into place. Alas, like I feared I didn’t have the second mini-PCIe connector soldered. Now I need to find out where to get a connector and if it’s possible to hack in place.

So it’s good news and bad news 🙁

MemberThanks for the info. The SSD seems to work fine, I’m just finishing touches on win 7 install so I can start actually doing something else but installing things. About 18 gigs space left on the SSD so gotta see how this turns out.

MemberUpdate: SSD Bricked, RMA process ongoing. Seems OCZ responds promptly. The connector is soldered but no idea if it is enabled or not, or even if its soldered correctly. At least Sammy works. I’m still waiting for the mail to deliver my airport card and broadcom card, should be any day now.

MemberUpdate: Broadcom HD decoder arrived. No worky. Seems that either the soldering failed, or the the connector is disabled by the mobo. Dunno. Cannot try to install the broadcom card on the connector with the wifi card, its spacers are on the wrong spot. Now if only I could move one spacer from hole to another everything would be easier.
Here’s couple pix if someone can look if there’s something wrong with the connections.

ParticipantThings just don’t seem to be going your way.
When you say spacer do you mean the black rubber cubes or the metal standoff?
As the black rubber cubes can be pulled off and stuck back on.Are the pins of the connector just resting on top of the solder or are they soldered in place? Either way I’d check them with a multi-meter?

MemberI meant the metal standoffs with threads for screws. The friend who did soldering had a multimeter but couldn’t be sure. I’d need a picture of the bottom of the mobo.

ParticipantFaktados – The soldering looks quite good but I can only see one side of the pci-e connector clearly from the pictures even when enlarged. The problem could be a dry solder joint or two?
Is the Broadcom card not recognised at all? ie. can you see it in device manager for instance after installing drivers for it (assume it needs one)?
It should fit in the wifi card slot even though the fixing post is on the wrong side? The post can be desoldered and removed if you want. Your friend will need desolder braid and also to be carefull 🙂

MemberWhen I booted up the machine with the card and tried to install the drivers, the installer said “No Broadcom blahblah detected.” And the Wifi card currently in the computer is about half the length of the hd card so the fixing posts push into some components of the card when installed.
edit 2: Could the second port be somehow disabled to discourage hacking?

Don’t think there is any setting in the bios but it’s worth having a look through the menus.Suspecting it may be a dry joint try the following with a multimeter.
Remove the wifi card
Power up the sammy
Check +ve (these will be +1.5V or 3.3V) and common (GND) rail pins using the wifi pci-e as a reference and pinout as below. With power off, check the resistance between each adjacent pair of pins and compare to readings from the corresponding pins on the wifi pci-e.
Any abnormalities can then be investigated and re-soldered if necessary.
Mini PCI Express Pinout can be found here
Hope this helps and let us know how you get on

MemberGod damn I’m suspecting I’ve done something really bad to mess up my karma. My Airport card has still not arrived and OCZ’s RMA lookup tool says my SSD hasn’t arrived to their depot in the Netherlands. I sent it a last Wednesday and it was supposed to take 3-4 business days. I hope someone didn’t intercept my mail.
Maybe I’ll have to start sacrificing to Satan to speed up this process. xD

MemberQuick update: I’ve written off the SSD as a loss. Finnish postal service doesn’t know anything and OCZ has not received it after being 2 weeks on the road. This project is really testing my patience and ability for not swearing (in a forum). Needless to say, my airport card has not arrived either but I’ve already confirmed a refund if it doesn’t arrive this week.

MemberI think Beelzebub is looking for chocolate cake sacrifices now, he’s fed up with the usual stuff. Oh, and he’ll accept by email 🙂
