 few questions:
problem is, i’m struggling to find a sim only mobile broadband package in the uk – anyone over here had any luck? even if i had to get a dongle – do they tend to have a bog standard sim in i can pry out and use with the sierra (etc) pcie card?

Interesting thread here!I have a 3 dongle that has a standard sim card. Regarding best mobile broadband deal in UK: I think 3 still offers the best value, but I have the new Computer Shopper in front of me still wrapped in plastic. It has a topic about home and mobile broadband deals. I will read it tonight and report back. July 17, 2009 at 6:30 pm #195658cheese Membercheers Thin Air, had a couple of recommends for ‘3’, but annoyingly on checking their coverage for my postcode – there is none. Not necessarily a problem, since it’ll be one place i don’t need to use mobile data – but it’s given me worry about coverage in this area generally (little bit out in the sticks) interested to hear anything new you find out July 17, 2009 at 9:09 pm #195681Thin Air Member[quote1247862997=cheese]

[/quote1247862997]Ah, coverage, now you’re mentioning something that I have taken for granted till last week. Living in a very dense signal area, I assumed to get similar on holiday in south west of England and south Wales. Boy, was I wrong. Notspots everywhere! BTW, I was amazed how easy and quick it was to connect the 3 dongle using Ubuntu. Much easier than with win. Regarding the best prepaid deal acc to Comp Shopper: (DL speed tested by users using speedtest.net) 3: best value: £10 for 1Gb, £15 for 3Gb, £20 for 7Gb, fastest: 0.96Mbit/s. Bad customer support. T-mob: wifi not included. 3Gb for £15 valid for one month. A whopping 67% satisfied customers (highest of the three ISPs). 0.58Mbit/s Vodafone: 0.8Mbit/s, most expensive but unlimited valid. £15 for 1Gb. O2 and Orange not tested. I guess -lack of- coverage in your case is very important. Hope this helps. July 18, 2009 at 8:12 pm #195659cheese Memberdoes indeed help, many thanks yep SW England, wilts, gloucester and South Wales… pretty much my home patch- it’s not good is it. i work all over the country, so coverage round here is not such a show stopper, but it would be nice to be able to use it a little bit, at least – i think it’s worth a punt on the ‘3’ one since it’s best value. If it stinks, no real loss. ta July 25, 2009 at 4:57 pm #195697magicboy Member[quote1248540975=strombom]
Woho, it works perfectly. Extremely smooth installation: Put in SIM card, start computer, a wizard shows and I select my broadband supplier from a list, press ok and three seconds later I’m online 🙂Download speeds around 800kbit/s from my apartment. I’m using the second wifi antenna until the new antenna arrives. [/quote1248540975] Strombom : I bought a new N120 with same situation as you. i.e. no SIM card holder and mini pcie slot bulti-in. Great to learn that you had successfully installed them yourself and working. May I know what component you had soldered and what was the value of the component? Appreciate if you can post a picture and point out your soldered componet(s). Many Thanks. July 30, 2009 at 4:38 pm #195698CraigBruce MemberSoldering support ? My N120 arrived today – not cracked the case yet to see what I have/haven’t got, but the blanking plate on the SIM slot doesn’t inspire confidence that I have the card holder or slot. Can anyone help/point me in the direction of someone who could help with any required soldering ? Not soldered in a few years and my shaky old hands aren’t as young as they used to be 🙂 (components also seemed to be a lot bigger when I were a lad!) I’m based in London, UK btw I have a stack of components already enroute to me – Sierra 3G card, WLAN upgrade (N), 500Gb hard drive, the required antenna etc. not ordered the card holder or pci slot until sure I need them. July 30, 2009 at 6:56 pm #195660cheese Memberwas it a proper blanking plate? mine had a tough, semi rigid plasticy looking bit of tape stuck on, but has the sim holder fitted. without taking the case apart, you should be able to peer into the vents underneath, towards the front and see the pci-e slot. The grill nearest the righthand edge is where the wifi card is, and next to it, not quite under the other grill, is where the second slot would be, you can just see it, in line with the wifi card towards the centre of the netbook, with a penlight. just had a quick peek in my n120 and it appears i’m lucky enough to have the mini pci-e and sim connectors, so following all this and a couple of other threads with interest, cheers for all the pioneering everyone.few questions:
problem is, i’m struggling to find a sim only mobile broadband package in the uk – anyone over here had any luck? even if i had to get a dongle – do they tend to have a bog standard sim in i can pry out and use with the sierra (etc) pcie card?if i go that route – seems the best option for me would be the o2 pay as you go route since i’ll only be using it very occasionally – and seem to passthrough BT Openzones a fair bit and could be using the free wifi access a fair bit as well. basically – any thoughts anyone, on which packages are currently the least rip off in the uk?
[/quote1248981559]buy an unlocked dongle from ebay (aprox £40) hen do a search on ebay for iphone simm, you can get them for about tenner and it gives you 12 months free net access!!!! ive been using one for the last 6 months and its faultless!! infact, here ya go: [MOD EDIT] Long links fixed ~TCMuffin July 30, 2009 at 9:16 pm #195661cheese Memberexcellent, just sorted my internal 3g, using the sim from a pay as you go dongle and one of the sierra wireless pcie cards – but that sounds like i won’t need to be topping it up soon… many thanks! July 31, 2009 at 6:26 am #195699CraigBruce Membercheese: had exactly the same as you – semi-rigid plasticy thing over the sim slot. Also looks like the pic-e connector is in there. Not cracked the case as yet, will wait for the rest of the components to arrive…but panic over! Hope this helpsJuly 31, 2009 at 7:00 pm #195662cheese MemberGood stuff, ebay auction just finished for my payg iphone sim – £4.20, worth it even if it gets booted by o2 after a week, hehe. settings link bookmarked for when it gets here. regarding the user agent switcher – is that an essential in order to browse using these sims? or an advisable in order to stop o2 noticing it’s not an iphone… July 31, 2009 at 7:42 pm #195648jeepers01 Participant[quote1249069228=cheese]regarding the user agent switcher – is that an essential in order to browse using these sims? or an advisable in order to stop o2 noticing it’s not an iphone…[/quote1249069228]The latter 🙂 August 14, 2009 at 6:45 pm #195700djcorey MemberGreat post. I know that this is a Samsung forum… but I need to do something similar to my Lenovo s10-2. I need to install a SIM card socket… there is a slot on the back of the computer (behind the battery) where you insert the SIM card, but there is no socket on the motherboard. It appears that there is a spot to solder one, however I can only see 7 points, not the 8 that are in your instructions. I also see that there SIM card sockets seem to only come in 6 or 8 pin configurations. Any thoughts? Note: I have a picture of the motherboard, but I am struggling to add it to this post. Thanks in advance for any help! August 14, 2009 at 10:38 pm #195649jeepers01 Participant[quote1250288673=djcorey]Great post. djcorey – my thoughts on your posting FWIWLooking at stromboms annotated picture on the 8 pads it appears that the 2 x CD pads are grounded. If that is the case then only 6 lines are directly required to the sim card reader.
Namely – PWR, GND, RST, VPP, CLK, and DAT
You could check that out with a multimeter on your motherboard to confirm. Your CD line could therefore well be your 7th point. This posting shows the NC10 Sim header connections from the pci-e connector which you could trace through with a multimeter on your board as the pci-e connections will be the same. I have not checked the accuracy of the pin identifications and it may pay to verify them at allpinouts.org and the card manufacturer you are using. You may find this post interesting although it claims that the sim card reader is already installed in the S10-2 but that could well be due to the fact that the posting is concerning a Philippines model.
