MemberWe just got an N120, and can’t get it to connect to our Vlink router. It appears to be connected (shows 5 bars), but there’s a red question mark, and it says “Validating Identity.” When we took it to Starbucks, it didn’t have all that stuff and seemed to connect easily.
We’ve also gotten the message: “Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you onto the network dlink.”
I’m not too bright on the whole wireless thing, so you’ll have to talk baby talk for me. The wireless is working on our other laptop, BTW.
Otherwise, we love this thing! It’s gorgeous. I don’t think this is an N120 issue, but rather our network or a Stupid-User issue.

Participantdiinin – Welcome
Have you tried rebooting the router – power down wait for 10 seconds and then power up again.Check the wireless connection again
The next thing to try is to flush out your existing connection.
Right click wireless icon > Status > Properties > Wireless Networks.
Under Preferred networks select your network and Remove it. Close out the menus.
Then search for your network again and re-enter your wireless keyHopefully the wireless will be working now
If you still get Validating Identity error message try this
Right click wireless icon > Status > Properties > Wireless Networks.
Under Preferred networks select your network and choose Properties
The go to the Authentication tab and uncheck the box saying “Enable IEEE802.1x to the available network”
Then reboot the sammyCheck you have the latest Microsoft Updates and allow installation as requested by the update process. Remember to reboot the sammy after they are all installed.
Hope this helps

MemberOkay, I’ve tried all of the above. I can’t install updates until I have a connection, though. But now after unchecking the “Enable IEEE802.1x” box, I’m getting this message:
“Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address.”
UGH. I was SO hoping this would be as easy as our two laptops (Dell and Gateway), which just immediately found the connection and were off!

MemberOh, one more note we’re getting. Now the red question mark is a yellow exclamation point, and under connection status, it says:
“You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.”

MemberWhen I go to “Network Connection Details,” the IP address listed in the box is neither that of my router, nor of my computer on the internet, as I found when visiting “whatismyipaddress.com.”
Could that be the problem?

MemberI am so frustrated….

There are 3 IP addresses to consider –-
* IP address assigned to your internet connection by your ISP as you obtained from the above website, but this is not needed in the setting up of the wireless network and is of academic value only.
*The sammy machine IP address – When the sammy tries to connect, the DHCP server on the router assigns the sammy a unique IP address for the connection.
*Gateway IP address – This is the router IP address and should be something like 192.168.1.1 depending on your router setup and becomes the default gateway for all machines connection to the wireless network. You could verify the IP address information with ipconfig
start > run > cmd > ipconfig /allAssuming DHCP is set up on your router correctly, and there is no reason to doubt this as your other PC/Laptop connects ok, then ensure the gateway IP address is the same as your router address.
In this thread I posted details and pics for the network connection which should help you to confirm your settings are correct. No internet connection
Hope this helps

Participant[quote1255026681=PaulPoole]I had this problem and resolved it by disabling ZoneAlarm Firewall and enabling Windows Firewall. [/quote1255026681]In Zone Alarm either allow access to the Atheros card IP address when prompted.
Or add an IP address range in the Firewall Zones screen. When configured correctly it is a better firewall than the standard Windows offering IMHO
Hope this helps

MemberThere actually is no gateway address in there. My router address is the same as yours. When I went into ipconfig, it said:
Dhcp enabled: yes
autoconfiguration enabled: yes
Autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.3.130
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:So there isn’t anything in there for default gateway, and the autoconfigured IP address is not my router address, which is 192.168.0.1
Is this shedding any light on what’s going on? If so, what do I do next?
BTW I appreciate all the help here! Ü

Check the router DHCP setup to ensure DHCP is enabled and working.
Windows can’t get an IP address from the router and has assigned 169.254.3.130 which does not help. (It assigns a default value in conditions such as this)Check the firewall is not blocking (temporarily disable to check)
Try Repair Connection – Right click wireless icon.
Then check the Connection Properties (see here for pics) and ipconfig to see all is well
Double check you have the correct wireless key
If there is still a problem with the gateway address then the IP addresses can be fixed so not needing the DHCP server.
Check the other laptop with ipconfig and see what address is assigned to that machine.
Do you have any other wireless devices connected to the router ie. weather stations etc.
Hope this helps

MemberNo, no other devices connected to the router. I didn’t even think about doing the ipconfig on the other laptop. Will do that hopefully tomorrow before I go to work. I work 12 hour night shifts all weekend, so will have to pick this up again on Monday. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this! Hopefully next week will bring success. I’ll let you know how it goes.

MemberOkay, I’ve done a lot of snooping around these computers (desktop with a wired connection to the router, a working laptop with wireless, and the Sammy). I changed the IP address on the Sammy to 192.168.2.1, which is what our laptop uses and also what is listed for the modem (my son had to change that to get things working again last Dec, he says because our DSL modem is old).
So now my system tray LOOKS like all is well, and the thing says it’s connected with an excellent signal. There are no red X’s or yellow warning signs anymore.
BUT I still can’t open IE. It says: “Can’t find server” and “Internet Explorer could not open the search page.”
I ran diagnostics (boy, doesn’t that sound important…) and it said “The default gateway is a different subnet than this computer. The default gateway entry is invalid.”
So I went in and put 192.168.2.1 as the default. But I’m still getting the same “Can’t find server” message. I’ve typed in other URL’s, including my router address, and nothing comes up.
BTW, DHCP is disabled on the other laptop. I assume that is b/c my son fixed the IP address to something other than the default. DHCP is enabled on the router.
I feel like we’re getting closer, since my system tray icon looks like it should now, but somehow I’ve got to get on the internet or the Sammy is just a $340 machine for my daughter to play Pinball on! Ü
