I was just wondering because back in.. 2003 or 2004 we did a huge ABX Test at the technical University of Berlin with 150 Students and 16 Rounds of testing at 192kbps, 256kbps and 320kbps using LAME.12% were able to identify compressed files at 192kpbs, sadly i forgot about the result at 256kbps but the result at 320kbps was only 3%.

Thank you, Don, that’s really interesting 🙂I’ve just checked my iTunes files and the average lossless bit rate seems to be between 500 and 950 kbps – obviously depending on the bit rate of the original recording. So there is a lot more information contained in ripped lossless formats than that downloaded from the iStore. And of course, the original CD provides its own backup for my iTunes library.
On a side note, it’s just as well my hearing (and, incidentally, my sense of smell) is so good as my unaided eyesight is rubbish -11.25 and -9.75. Without my specs, I can see the end of my nose, but not much further !lol

That’s purly down to wether the said store has been provided with a master copy of the original or not as the case may be. Take for example dancing on the ceiling. One of my fav tracks. I have 3 copies. One from iTunes one from a record an one from a cd. Which do u think sounds the best?

The one from the CD – assuming you’ve ripped it using a lossless format 😕April 26, 2009 at 8:11 pm #189413Gav2k
MemberIt’s actually the iTunes version the cd version lacks some. I know it sounds silly but even in lossless format the cd version still lacks. The iTunes version seem to be of a better quality. This is very different with new music cd quality is better than the iTunes version. But hey welcome to the digital age.

Memberi’ve always been a big fan of winamp.
the library system it has lets you organize and search a number of ways, plus you can use the tag updater to get album and song info, etc. and you can get plug-ins so it can auto-sync with your portable music playerMay 15, 2009 at 3:11 am #189396ktb
MemberI’m just now catching up on this convo and find it really interesting! jayne, you’re a true audiophile. I am not, but I do love my music.
Just as an update, I downloaded Media Monkey and it’s the closest to MusicMatch Jukebox that I’ve yet found. It’s having trouble tagging music properly, but otherwise is looking pretty perfect. Thanks to whoever suggested it!

[/quote1242770095]Mediamonkey rules, I have the Gold version (it’s not expensive) which has a few extra options such as folder monitoring and faster ripping. I was so impressed with the basic version I felt compelled to donate to the developers 🙂

MemberYep Mediamonkey is a great program. But didn’t have a few things at the time I wanted and that was searching database by album cover. Which at the time didn’t have that feature. May have it now.
So went with J. Rivers free Media Jukebox which has all the things I need.
But had all that I needed without being locked down iTunes.

Member::chuckles:: I’m the exact opposite: I only see my CDs long enough to rip them, so I don’t remember what most of the album covers look like.
ObTopic: If by “search by album art” you mean “show the album art pictures for whatever songs/albums/playlists/etc. I’ve picked in the myriad other organization options in some sort of thumbnail view ” instead of, oh, typing “blue jacket -artist:”Weird Al” Yankovic” into a search box, then yes, the current MediaMonkey has that feature. :)

MemberAnd just stumbled on this one freeware and beta was just released in Dec. and looks to be coming along nicely. Version 1.0 just around the corner.

Tho it does require the .net framework.
