MemberI’ve just applied this month’s MS updates to my NC10 (2GB RAM).
Following this, I get one of two errors:
At startup I get a Winlogon encountered an error and had to quit. After hitting the ‘send’ button, the machine operates normally, and will shut down normally.
However, on the next boot, I don’t get the Winlogon error, but when I power off, I get a BSOD fatal error – too briefly to catch the number – and the machine re-starts, with the Winlogon error again.
Any thoughts, please?

MemberThis sounds like you have a Trojan.
You can try and replace the file by Logging on in safe mode, and opening a Command prompt. Then expand winlogon.ex_ from the XP CD.
For example:
expand D:i386winlogon.ex_ c:WindowsSystem32Winlogon.exe
Also do the usual scans. I recommend Malwarebytes.

MemberIf you turn off the automatic restart, you can see what the BSOD is about. Go to the System Control Panel, switch to the Advanced tab, and click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System Failure, turn off “Automatically restart”.

MemberThanks, guys. I rolled back then re-installed the patches one by one. The ones causing the problems were for .NET framework, which isn’t installed. (Which will teach me to pay more attention :)). Curiously, WinUpdate also tried to install them on my notebook, but failed. I’m confused, but all is well again this morning. Phew!

MemberThat’s weird…
I never faced a problem with .net framework, especially since Microsoft bundles everything (except 1.0) in one big package.
Must be totally random then?

MemberI hope so, Don. All is well today, and MS are no longer offering the update as I’ve hidden it. 🙂

MemberJust to add, you can review all of the MS updates in add/remove programs in the control panel. Just tick the ‘show updates’ box. Useful for tracking down updates that have caused problems.

MemberYeah what s’ said.
Rik can you paste the name of the update you’ve hidden?
BTW: Are you using Windows Update (default) or Microsoft Update (the smart choice)?

MemberThanks, S’, it’s one of the first things I do with a new machine. 🙂
Don, the hidden update is .NET framework 1.1 SP1, but there was a second, which was something to do with .NET 1.1 and, iirc, a printer function. For some reason, I can’t find this to unhide, and it’s not detailed in the restore point.
I’m using MS Update, though it still thinks it’s Windows Update…
