MemberHas anyone any experience of using an NC20 in a vehicle? I’m interested in a couple of things: what sort of mount do you use (RAM Mounts have a vast catalogue of mounts but they all appear to be for 15″+ or (in their marine mounts section) appropriate for GPS systems of 8 or 9″) – are ther other, more appropriate car mounts for the NC20. Ideally I want to mount between the driver/passenger in a Land Rover Defender
The other question is about reliability in a vehicle. At the moment I have various GPS/Mapping products installed on a bulky (but very reliable) IBM Thinkpad and I want to move them all to my NC20. But, the main purpose is off-road and therefor subject to various bumps/shakes – ultimately I would hope to move to SSD (when I can afford it) but I’m interested to know if anyone’s use and NC20 (or NC10) in this manner and if so what problems, if any, you experienced?

MemberUnless you have some sort of shock absorbing mount – I would think that any HDD based netbook/notebook would struggle in this environment 😕

MemberThese guys do car mounts. They offered me one to review but I don’t drive lol! There is an NC10 specific one I think but not sure about NC20. The one I link to is generic.
Drop them an email and ask them what they think. Let them know SammyNetbook.com sent you over ;)!

Memberthe samsung will perform well in your vehical providing you swap the hdd out. it will work with the hdd in there but if your offroading and take a violent knock then you would suffer issues.
personally i would go for the n310 having had one in my hands the rubber outer would take a little more abuse as would the keyboard as its sealed more so than the other n series machines.

MemberThanks for the pointer to Ultimate Netbook for their car mount. They were very helpful on the ‘phone but I don’t think I would want to rely on a piece of Velcro strapping to secure a Netbook at the pivot point between base and screen although I quite liked the articulated design which in itself should absorb some shock..
I then contacted RAM UK and it appears that their is now a base specific for Netbooks (you need to see th US website at http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045050051052045054/Default.aspx ) and this secures the Netbook either open or closed at 4 secure points.
Given that this RAM base has a myriad of mounting options then I think it’s probably the route I will follow.
Thanks to those who advised on the HDD issues – maybe the SSD will need to be sooner than I thought.
Dear wife, about my next Birthday …….. yes I know it seems a lot for 64GB but it’s really worth it ……

MemberHi All.
I am tagging this post to (Mounting NC20 in a off-road vehicle) as its related.
I have a NC10, running “Memory Map”, ( a digital version of the Ordance Survey maps)and wonder if any one has used a mapping program and a Bluetooth GPS reciever to act as a Sat Nav type of unit. Sat Nav fails to work in the situations that I would need this type of kit, often no roads, just tracks/paths, often in Offroad type situations. The NC10 sits on a foam base, works with no problem, though often required to work on the move. I have been offered a G55 Bluetooth, solar powered GPS Reciever, as the owner is now using the installed antitheft/ tracking device in his new laptop which will replace the old GPS reciever.
