For some time now I’ve been using a memory stick with portable software for use in Internet cafes etc., and there is an amazing range of progs available. Many of them are ‘stealth’, i.e. adapted to leave no trace on the host computer. If you carry a USB stick and/or want to save space on your Sammy I’d recommend them.
Some of the apps cited in other posts here are available as portable versions, including the Mozilla suite, GIMP, CCleaner etc., along with many diagnostic tools and other techie apps. 😉
Try PortableApps and Lupo for comprehensive portable suites with their own launchers. Or just google ‘portable apps’. 🙂
Caveat: some of these are betas, so (although I’ve had no problems) use at your own risk.
Haven’t seen this topic mentioned in the forum but apologies if I’m repeating info.
Finally, one essential for me nowadays is Chrome. Anyone else feel the same…?
yep I am using chrome more and more – it works great on the NC10 and has all the basic featues I personally use. It won’t be for everyone but nothing will please everyone!
I don’t think we’ve mentioned portable apps before. I’ve come across it before, I remember reading about that sort of thing with respect to virtualisation. So you can run apps from a USB key in a “sandboxed” virtual enviroment.
Zero footprint apps would be very useful with a netbook that came with a tiny SSD drive! Not such an issue with Sammy’s 160gb 🙂

I was just thinking that. But portable apps are handy none the less, for example when Sammy dies on you!
My Scottish blood sees any saving (including drive space) as canny. 😉
My main intention, though, was to point people towards another source of useful programs, already sorted into various categories, including tech/comms/office apps.
The stealth aspect is incidental, tho’ pretty darned useful for public systems!
Hope this clarifies things. 🙂
