May 2, 2009 at 7:19 pm #162104Anonymous GuestFirst post, hi everyone Have been looking at netbooks for some time. After trying many out, I bought the NC10 sight unseen from costco.com (2-year warranty, 90-day free return period!) and have been very satisfied. In case anyone’s interested, here’s how I have configured it so far. Desktop: nothing. Right now it’s just black until I find an image I like. I removed all icons, and use Launchy to access everything including My Docs, Recycle Bin, etc. Oh, and I got rid of that pesky “Confirm Delete” dialog via the recycle bin properties. One less keystroke. Under appearance–advanced I reduced the size of my active window border to 20, with 10-point Arial font in bold. I’m not used to the look but it gives me more room to work in my active window. For CD installations I just shared the drive on my wife’s machine. Going to install Office 2000 today; hope it works! Firefox: Aside from the browser window itself, the only things visible are the scrollbar on the right and the menu bar on top, with the address and search bars on the same line. F4 brings up the All-In-One Sidebar, which has history, Delicious bookmarks, add-on maintenance, and Perapera-kun for Japanese. Hovering over the left window edge calls out the Tree Style Tabs exension, so I don’t have to have tabs on the top of my window. For the back button I use rocker gestures with All-in-one gestures on my mouse and touchpad buttons; I also programmed the bottom left and right corners of the touchpad to take me back and forward, which also works in Explorer. You can do this through control panel–mouse–device settings–settings. Explorer: all icons are small, and I use classic view to get rid of that dumb left side taskbar. For more involved file management I use XYplorer, which is not free anymore, but I still had the install file archived. 😉 Some other installed software: Comodo firewal, EasyCleaner, CCleaner, Teracopy, LupasRename, 7-Zip, Quicktime alternative, Real alternative, Irfanview, and TweakUI. Uninstalled: Macafee, Samsung EDS (sounds like crap). -bs May 2, 2009 at 9:32 pm #190540mataempat Memberwelcome to the forum! May 3, 2009 at 5:07 am #190543warwound MemberAnother tweak to add to this is thread is to create a RAM drive for your browser to use to store it’s temporary internet files. I’ve created just a 128MB RAM drive for now as i have just the original 1GB of memory.
A 2GB module is on it’s way from EBuyer and should arrive next week – but i doubt if i’ll need to increase the size of the RAM drive. Both Internet Explorer (6 & 7 dunno about 8 ) and Firefox can be reconfigured to use a folder on the RAM drive for temporary internet files. The theory is that the hard drive now stands more chance of spinning down as it’s not going to be in use (unless of course you’re doing more than browsing).
If the hard drive spins down then you’ll have a quieter browsing experience and save some battery power.I’ve only recently made the RAM drive on my NC10 so it’s too early to report whether it’s a truly useful tweak or not – i’ll post again when i have something to report. Martin. May 3, 2009 at 10:03 am #190539TCMuffin MemberWelcome to the forum, Martin, and thank you for such an interesting first couple of posts. I’ll be really interested to know the results of your RAM experiment 🙂 You may be interested in this guide to optimising Firefox and Tiny Menu, a Firefox add-on which replaces the standard menu bar with a tiny menu popup. Oh…and I also use AdBlock Plus and NoScript with Firefox. Once you have Firefox looking and behaving as you want it to, you can use MozBackup to backup settings, favourites, etc. May 4, 2009 at 9:08 am #190541Don_Audio Member[quote1241428046=warwound]

May 4, 2009 at 12:06 pm #190542simonkn Memberfunny, i bought the NC10 just over a month ago and thought i’d just be using it for surfing and emails. And now look at my Program Files folder:
 MS Office 2007 Premium
 Quark Xpress 5
Sony Motion Picture Browser running HD 1080i .dv footage from my HDR-TG3 AVCHD camcorder
PhotoShop CSOnly using PShop for light duties otherwise all run splendidly!
