MemberHey guys,
am i right in thinking that the NC10 at Argos here-
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5071223/Trail/searchtext%3ENC10.htm
-is the original one? ie not the downgraded newer one which supposedly has a worse battery and screen? And do you reckon this would be a decent buy when compared to the N130 & N140 at Amazon for £228 & £285? I’m put off by the worse battery on the N130 but would rather not go much over £250 unless there was a real step up in perfomance (as opposed to just crazy battery life and slightly better sound).Any thoughts appreciated…

MemberHi Jose
The link you’ve provided specifically mentions a 6 cell battery – if this is correct, then yes this is the ‘original’ NC10 – and £239 looks like a pretty good price to me 🙂

MemberHi jose,
Going by the spec on your linked page, if I didn’t already have an ‘old’ NC10 I’d buy that one.

Participantjose – That does look and attractive price for a 6 cell NC10.
I posted some observations comparing the N140 and the NC10 a while back in this thread.
N140 compared to NC10 – observationsIf you need longer battery life, a slightly larger touchpad and a little better sound then the N140 is an option, but the screen does not open as far as the NC10.
Hope this helps

I know, mods don’t like to be corrected… 🙂
There’s been some discussion about “new” and “old” NC10 version since October or so.
The battery alone is no reakl indicator, it’S rather the screen-size.
The linked NC10 is advertized as 10.2″, that’S what the “old” one had.
“New” ones come with 10.1″.
This might still be some kind of “copy-paste” error. Don’t get fooled.
Better ask for the model-code.
Old ones got something like NP-NC10-KA0…
New ones got something like NP-NC10-KB0…Differences in short:
(Maybe someone might add this to the Wiki?)Model-code:
Old: NP-NC10-KA0…
New: NP-NC10-KB0…Battery:
Old: 5200mAh
New: 4400mAhDisplay:
Old: 10.2″ LED backlight
New: 10.1″ maybe CCFL-backlight (roumored)January 12, 2010 at 12:51 am #209077TCMuffin
MemberThank you, ChainGuy, I didn’t realise that there was such a difference between the original NC10s and the ‘new’ ones.
Why would Samsung bother making changes to the ‘old’ NC10, when newer (better? and more expensive) models have already been released 😕

MemberThanks guys, that’s all really useful (as everything on this site seems to be 🙂
It’s now £249 at Argos which is still pretty good, but i think i’ll do as ChainGuy suggests and get them to confirm which model it is and exact spec before i make a decision. I’ve also just noticed that they have a second NC10 on the site advertised at £229 with a 10.2” screen and “up to four hours battery life” which i guess is the newer model and the screen size is a mistake. Worth an email to clarify things i think.
I’m keeping a close eye on the price of the N140 at various places in the hope it will get reduced and make the decision for me..
Thanks again.

Be careful – I’d say that’s the ‘old’ NC10 with a 3-cell battery!January 12, 2010 at 9:51 am #209082tonytb
MemberI did say ” Going by the spec on your linked page”, the 10.2″ screen indicates the old model, as you rightly point out ChainGuy.

It’s a shame, but every company does so.
When you’ve got a product, that’s selling so well and that’s so good, that it hurts the sale of your newer products, but has less profit per unit than your newer models you only got two choises:a) Kill the old model:
Most likely this won’t help your overall sales very much, newer models will sell better but won’t compensate. Used maket-prices for old model will rise, but that’s of no use.b) “Modify” the old model to be more profitable (AKA kill quality)
This is the “smart” way. The old product sells itself without any advertising, newer models can take over slowly. To rise profits, change components to lower priced/quality parts. Hope no one will notice. It’s rumoured, in case of that display-thing, it’s not completely Samsung’s fault, as 10.2″ displays became very expensive and partly unavailable to the manufacturers in Q3/2009. All switched to the cheaper 10.1″ displays with better availability.
In fact, the old NC10’s 10.2″ displays were “very good”. Being quite bright, non glossy and with pretty good contrast. (Also installed in MSI Wind U100/110/120 and early EeePC1000s).
The new 10.1″ display (can only speak for the one in my dad’s new N140, but seems to be the same as in N110, N130, N140, “new” NC10…) isn’t bad either, but doesn’t come close to my “old” NC10.
(Maybe I’ll sum that up in a new topic in a few days…)January 13, 2010 at 2:11 pm #209085staticgirl
MemberArgos run a shop on ebay selling refurbished stuff amongst other things. I bought an original refurbed NC10 from then via this shop and saved lots of money. It was £197 net! And it is totally lovely. I love my Sammy!

All the usual t&cs argos would have elsewhere….January 13, 2010 at 2:17 pm #209079TCMuffin
MemberGood find, staticgirl, and thank you for sharing 🙂

MemberThanks Staticgirl that’s a great spot – i bought my ipod refurbished and it’s still going strong after 4 years so a refurbished netbook would definitely appeal if the price was right. It seems they have a 12 month guarantee as well 🙂

MemberI have an NC10 KA06 which came with a 3 cell battery (2200MaH) but the shop was online and didn’t state which battery it came with. It was selling for £380 but got it reduced in a sale so thought logically that it was the full price and hopefully the 6 cell unit. Wasn’t argos though!
