PMCC
MemberI decided to open this thread after reading this http://www.sammymobile.com/plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?25986
Bear in mind that the newest programs are not designed with netbooks in mind. What is the advantage / disadvantage of using older versions of various softwares? What is the best version of the bunch for netbooks?
For me, I downgraded to Adobe PDF reader 6.x since the first few days. The older version is much faster and still have browser integration. Recently I downgraded to Flash player 7, and movies seems to be smoother (even in power save mode). Of course, most people here are using win XP.

MemberIMO – the newest versions of software are not always ‘the best’ except in one respect. The newest versions are generally more secure as they’ve been patched to close known loopholes which are exploited by hackers.
For this reason, I would always recommend that my clients have fully updated systems.

MemberAdobe Reader is full of useless unnecesary bloat.
Foxit Reader is way, way better.

MemberIts a good point PMCC. However I guess Jayne’s security issue is pretty important.
Many of us are actually using Windows XP still so I guess that answers the question in one respect – at least XP, for now, is being patched still.
This was one of my criticisms of “Vista Haters” – they installed vista on old machines and expected it to run well, it would be like installing XP on a 486 and expecting it to run!
Anyway, isn’t there a site that has as old version archive? This one shows up in Google:

MemberAnother downside of using older versions is not being able to view files designed for newer versions. I do some desktop publishing (not on the NC10, though) and I’d hate to not be able to view a PDF I’d made.

Member+1 again for Foxit Reader. Sometimes newer ‘official’ programs have features we will never need. This is a typical case in point, I just need a program to read PDFs, with no bells or whistles (or bloat). There are other examples too. Each to their own 🙂

MemberASAIK Foxit sill doesn’t have browser integration. Given that I need to browse dozens of pdf everyday online I am not going to download each of them separately. On the other hand I never had any problem with viewing files despite the warnings.

MemberAnd that is the point of this thread. Find out what version of a particular software is both the smoothest and still adequate.
Despite the warnings I never notice anything wrong with the display from Adobe 6, and I prefer to view pdf files in the browser. So this version works for me.
I am still looking for the best flash player.
