Hey everyone, just wanted to share something I discovered today on my NC10!
I’m currently dual-booting XP and Win 7, with no restore partition, and I managed to trash my XP installation… not good! So, I was looking around online and found a interesting article on restoring XP from the /i386 folder on the C drive, here , and tried it out.
It’s worked perfectly, obviously I had to download and install all the samsung drivers and software using my other computer and transferring across via USB, but I’m now typing this from my XP partition from Sam. I just thought it might come in useful for other people
who don’t have a XP CD included with their netbooks, just a restore partition on the drive.
And, my D partition was left completely intact, my C was the only one touched, although I’d of course caution anyone to fully back up all their data/partitions first.
Two minor foibles I did find were that on initially running the winnt32.exe I did get an error message, I can’t remember the exact wording, but it prompted me to click “OK” to cancel the install, which I did, but the install then asked for the product key (from the sticker on the bottom of my NC10) and just carried on anyway, so I’m not sure what went on there. And the second one was that it made a default admin account called Owner, rather than asking you to set up one yourself, but that was easily fixed by creating a new account.
Also, which I guess makes it 3 minor foibles, the user folder from my old XP installation was still on my hard-drive with all my files (Which I’d backed up first) still intact, so I copied them all to the new account and then just deleted the folder.
Then I used EasyBCD to restore access to my win7 partition, and the job’s a good’un! 🙂
Nice one tuxgirl, that should help quite a few people 🙂
