MemberHi Guys,
I have a N310, which, for some unknown reason last night, rotated the display 90 degrees.
I got to the bottom of that and reset it, but since then many of the keys dont work.
q e t u i o a d z and all of the numbers!
I think its a virus, as seems odd as a hardware failure.
Steps taken:
Norton Antivirus full scan – nothing
Avast – nothing
Spybot – Nothing
Ad Aware – Nothing
Malwarebytes – Nothing
Flashed BIOS with latest version…. still nothing
Reset CMOS – Nothing
Then did Samsung Restore and wiped C drive back to original state…….still have the problem!
Any ideas….??? Help Help Help!July 28, 2010 at 8:05 pm #214911blacklion1725
MemberHello – I think if you have done a restore you can pretty much rule out a virus. It does sound like a hardware fault to me, maybe the keyboard itself, the motherboard or the connection between the two. A bit of a coincdence I agree though . Can you connect an external USB keyboard and if so do al the keys work? Also did you do any dismantling while you diagnosed the display issue – could you have dislodged a connector?

MemberA USB keyboard works fine.
Do they use the same driver?
I haven’t knocked or moved the machine..
Are the keyboards known to fail? And if they do, surely its all or nothing.. not random keys??
Thanks for your assistance.July 29, 2010 at 5:49 pm #214912blacklion1725
Memberhello – just suggested the usb keyboard to confirm that you didn’t have an obscure virus. Would have suggested uninstalling and reinstaling the keyboard from device manager (start-run-devmgmt.msc) but as you have done a full restore I doubt that would make a lot of odds
Out of interest when you were doing the full restore, and entering information like PC name, username etc, did you have to use any of the affected keys and if so did they work?
Only other things I can think to try are (i) try booting into safe mode (tap F8 at start up) or running a linux live cd if you are able to download and burn one). If the keyboard fault remains with a linux live cd (completely bypassing windows programs and drivers) I think its a nailed on hardware fault. Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux are good for this as they download, burn and run very quickly. You need an external DVD, or there are USB flash based variants

Memberhi
It wasn’t a FULL restore, only a samsung restore using the utility. Does that mean a virus could still be present?
No num lock keys are pressed.
Looks like I’ll send it back under warranty as I cannot work out whats wrong.August 6, 2010 at 6:10 pm #214909jeepers01

[/quote1281117937]Welcome to the forum.
If you have restored from a backup taken from your system there is a possibility that a virus if present will be re-installed with the restore.Try a Full Restore using [F4] at boot which will restore the sammy to a position just after it was set up when new. ie the initial installation. If you still experience keyboard problems after the restore then it points to a hardware issue IMO.
Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.
