MemberHi I gave my mum my old freeview digibox, she lives in Cornwall (over 200 miles away), I had it working fine and I showed her how to retune for the switchover last time I was down. Somehow something has gone wrong though (she’s not very techy) and everything is stuck. From what I can tell over the phone which is diffucult her phone is in the kitchen -(mum go get your wireless phone – it’s not working either – sigh – go get your moble and phone me back from in front of the TV – NO mum don’t turn your mobile off again – it’s just the digibox isn’t responding to the remote and won’t turn on (red light on box) – tried new batteries – nothing. Do remotes die after a while it’s quite old? Any suggestions. Tired a reset button on back of box – nothing.

ParticipantDo you know the make/model of the freeview box?
If it has buttons on the front of the box, do they still work?
If not have you tried switching it off and unplugging it for ~5 minutes? An improvised way of checking the remote control would be if she has a digital camera, if you look at the remote control via the camera (point the remote at the camera) and press some buttons on the remote you should be able to see the flashes from the remote. This also works with mobile phone cameras.

MemberHi Fifi, prob not what you want to hear but I well sympathise with non responsive freeview boxes. I don’t know what it is about them but I have always found them so unreliable. I even went for a expensive “brand” last time and it is still rubbish and unreliable.
I hate the damn things. Hopefully I will be upgrading my living room TV next year – finally HD – and will get an inbuilt one.
Hope Alf’s suggestions help progress things.

I hope you checked reviews for it first before buying 😀
It reminds me of the ones Argos (and some other places) were selling which were made by some generic manufacturer which bought the right to put certain company logos on the box, like Sony.Unfortunately the inbuilt ones can be just as bad, with the added bonus of not being able to replace it…

MemberHmmmm don’t know the make will look at the instructions I still have them.
No buttons on the box except the reset on the back which doesn’t help. I’ve noticed as I’ve bought things over the last few years that they are putting les and les button on things so that if your remote dies you are forced to buy more.
She doesn’t have digital camera, she has my old mobile but I’m not sure she will be techy enough to set it on camera she still has an aversion to turning it on even lol Shame this didn’t happen last week when I was own there visiting.
