MemberHello, right this is my first post so go easy on me! I have a black NC10 on order and i was wondering whether anyone had tried running Cubase or any other music creation/editing software. Obviously these machines are not designed for anything like this, and the majority of my recording work will be conducted on my desktop machine. It would just be convenient if these machines could run the programmes for basic work and editing of projects whilst on the move! I know that a MacBook runs Logic without to many problems, until you start doing serious stuff, my friend has an older model (1.86Ghz processor, 1GB RAM) pretty similar kinda spec.
So if anyone can shed light on this subject, please feel free!

ParticipantWhen comparing the specification the frequency of the processor is often not a good comparison. Processors of the same frequency can perform very differently.
The MacBook has a far faster processor and I believe that one also has a dual core processor, versus the NC10’s hyperthreaded processor (not as good). Various other parts of the MacBook are also a lot faster.
I have not used any music creation/editing software on my NC10, however I would say that for very light use it should be ok, I wouldn’t expect too much from it though.

MemberBeen there, done that and in my oppinion you can edit and process audio quite good on this little netbooks as long as you stay away from any “near realtime”stuff such as Midi Sequenzing or AL because the latency is just way to high!
Editing Audio with Auditition works quite good simply because its not real-time.
Still, you might suffer from the small display / low resolution

MemberThanks for the replies.
Thanks for your opinion Don Audio, it looks though i may have to bite the bullet and install my new shiny version of Cubase on this little machine! I thought that the display may be a problem with being able to view the tracks, but i guess this just means that i will have to scroll around alot!

MemberYeah and please let me know how it worked out for you.
I havent tried Cubase on the NC10 yet but here are my results so far:
Auditition: Runs OK
Ableton live: High latency and performance problems
Reason 4: High latency and performance problemsOne problem might be the build in audio. While it features somewhat good consumer audio quality over the jacks it def. lacks a well written driver with good ASIO support which might result in a higher latency than for example a USB soundcard solution.
Just my 2cents 😉

MemberI would agree that often the biggest limiter when using “pro” software is the small screen. That said, if you are taking it somewhere that has full size screens around then you can just plug it in.

MemberI’m running Ableton Live 6 without much issue, cpu usage is high but not as much as expected and I’ve only got 1gb ram at the minute. I’m sticking to mostly samples with frugal use of soft synths and fx, I’ve installed ASIO4All but it doesn’t get on with 48k HD audio cards as I tried it on my other laptop (an AMD HP). I have a first gen griffin imic usb audio interface I want try as well which is why I installed the ASIO driver. Screen size is more of an issue, need to look into some sort of virtual resolution thing.
In summary it is certainly usable and I’m planning on doing a thread/article with more detail.

MemberLooking forward to it LaptopAcid. Interesting what you say about the USB interface, as i use an M-Audio Pro USB interface on my desktop machine. Its not too big and heavy so it could be useful for carrying with my NC10 for use with Mainstage and other similar Apps.

MemberThink I’ve “solved” one issue which is the screen size with some help from this thread

Will have a multitude of other uses as well. -
