MemberHi guantas,
That is a hard question to answer without actually hearing it. I am sitting here now listening to my HDD making constant very faint clicking sounds. I think it has always done that though.

MemberHi tonytb,
I have read somewhere that this constant “head parking” could reduce the life of the hard drive.
Is it true?May 18, 2010 at 6:14 pm #213534jeepers01
Participantguantas – We have a WD drive on one of our NC10’s and it has always quietly clicked/ticked as data is randomly accessed. I think it is a feature of the drive since the other machine has a Samsung drive which is totally quiet in operation.
I don’t think you have anything to worry about unless the clicking is abnormally rhythmical and repetitive in nature.
This thread (and the links contained in it) may be of interest.
It’s always a good idea to keep you data backed up just in case the hdd decides to expire 🙂
Hope this helps

MemberHi jeepers01,
thank you for the answer.
I agree with your commentary: “It’s always a good idea to keep you data backed up just in case the hdd decides to expire ! “
I do it regularly on two external usb drives.May 23, 2010 at 10:20 pm #2135398sutton
MemberI have exactly the same problem with the WD drive on my NC10. It is like a little cricket sound every 10 or 15 seconds. Its not that loud but still annoying. I too have read many other NC10 owners with the same problem and not just with the WD drives. I am upgrading to an Intel X-25 V on Wednesday and hopefully that should be quieter as well as quicker.

Participant8sutton – Welcome to the forum
Let us know how you get on with the Intel X-25V if you have time.
I would certainly expect it to be quieter, in fact totally silent 😀

MemberI certainly will do. I know there are no moving parts, what I meant was that I expect less fan and an overall quieter system due to less power consumption and heat and obviously no cricket noise. We will see.
I am ugrading to 2GB of Corsair at the same time. Only had the machine for a month and have already upgraded to Win7 Home. So to the £240 I originally paid for the machine I have spent another £210 + carriage. But hopefully after Wednesday it will be a machine to love. I just like it at the moment 🙂
