March 10, 2009 at 11:45 pm #161468G@zz@ MemberHi all… I am on the verge of purchasing one of these (NC10) and live in the UK. What I am wanting to do is download HD movie trailers and watch them on my Pioneer Kuro 500M. I understand I will need a cable to go from the NC10 to the TV, but is there any way of getting sound via my Cambridge Audio 640R? Or do I just have to make do with the sound from the NC10 itself? Many thanks in advance, Gazza. March 11, 2009 at 12:20 am #185922Alfihar ParticipantThe NC10 has stereo audio out in the form of the headphones socket, with the right cable (depending on the available inputs) you could connect this to your TV or AV receiver. Maybe a 3.5mm headphone jack to dual RCA cable. If this isn’t good enough you could buy an external soundcard. I occasionally use an USB M-Audio Transit (though not generally with my NC10) which has an optical out for surround sound. One thing you may want to consider though is that the NC10 is not powerful enough to playback 720p HD videos in certain formats, at-least not without skipping frames. March 11, 2009 at 1:25 am #185919adatay92 MemberYou’ll probably need one of these cables to connect it to your amplifier. However, it will only give you Stereo sound. If you want digital output you need to buy an external USB sound card. March 11, 2009 at 11:37 am #185927 March 11, 2009 at 11:37 am #185927G@zz@ MemberThanks for the replies. Does that cable above have a specific name please? Stereo sound will be fine as I have Quad 21L2’s for my fronts and it will sound awesome through them. The 500M is a monitor with no speakers, so sound has to go via the receiver. I am sure the 480P versions will look stunning on my 50″ plasma (I hope so anyway). Just a shame we are not getting the NC10 Special Edition in the UK 🙁 March 11, 2009 at 11:46 am #185920adatay92 MemberIt’s a 3.5mm stereo jack to 2x phono. They are extremely easy to find on eBay or in any good electronic shop e.g. Maplin (UK). March 11, 2009 at 12:33 pm #185923Alfihar ParticipantBefore you go out and buy a cable, check to see if your TV or AV Receiver came with one. I’ve ended up with quite a few of them. Many TV’s bundle the cable with it (and a quick check indicates your Pioneer Kuro 500M comes with one). EDIT: If you can’t find one here’s a link to one on the Maplins site, Twin Phono to 3.5mm Stereo Jack Lead. March 11, 2009 at 1:11 pm #185928G@zz@ MemberMany thanks once again for the quick replies. Well would you Xmas Eve it, just checked the small box that came with the TV and as you said… there is one with it 🙂 I just need the VGA cable now. Looks like the 500M has both connections on it. Which one would be best please? March 11, 2009 at 1:22 pm #185924Alfihar ParticipantNot quite sure what you mean. Your TV appears to have a single standard VGA input (Number 3). All you should need is a standard VGA to VGA cable, something like VGA Monitor Cables Male to Female (though you can get them cheaper). That cable which came with your TV, does it’s connectors look just like the picture adatay92 posted, specifically the 3.5mm headphone plug? Just checking as they seem to call it something different in that manual. March 11, 2009 at 1:31 pm #185929G@zz@ MemberIt also has the digital connection too. Was not sure if there was such a thing as VGA to DVI and if it would make any difference. The cable in the box is exactly like the one in the picture, never knew it was even there. But then again I never had any need for one until now 🙂 Just need to bite the bullet and buy an NC10 in the UK now, but there are a few of us very uncertain as to whether we are going to get the Special Edition or not. It would be so annoying to buy the NC10 and then find out the SE is coming out. March 11, 2009 at 1:40 pm #185925Alfihar Participant[quote1236778334=G@zz@]

Ah right, well the DVI connection on the screen is a DVI-D so it only accepts a digital signal. The NC10 outputs an analogue signal via VGA. So you cannot connect the VGA output from the NC10 to the screens DVI-D input without a converter box (expensive for a decent one), this would probably result in a loss of quality as well. Using VGA to VGA the quality should be good. [quote1236778334=G@zz@]The cable in the box is exactly like the one in the picture, never knew it was even there. That’s lucky.
I’ve ended up with a cupboard of assorted cables which I rarely use but were included with various pieces of equipment.[quote1236778334=G@zz@]Just need to bite the bullet and buy an NC10 in the UK now, but there are a few of us very uncertain as to whether we are going to get the Special Edition or not. Yeah, I don’t know if the SE will be appearing in the UK. Though the differences aren’t that much, I seem to remember reading that it has a matt screen, so the only difference which can’t be changed seems to be the larger touchpad.March 11, 2009 at 2:59 pm #185921adatay92 MemberAs Alfihar says above, stick with the VGA-VGA cable as converting to DVI will be costly and it won’t actually give you any benefit. The screen is different along with a larger touchpad and the battery life is some 2.3 hours longer. Not the end of the world changes, but its always nice to have the best there is where possible 🙂March 11, 2009 at 4:31 pm #185926Alfihar Participant[quote1236788703=G@zz@]The screen is different along with a larger touchpad and the battery life is some 2.3 hours longer. Yeah, though according to the reviews it’s matt like the standard NC10’s and has the same resolution and physical size. I think it’s supposed to be brighter though, not that I use mine above ~25% brightness.Additionally it should be possibly to buy the higher capacity battery and use it with the standard NC10 if additional runtime is needed.
