MemberCould someone who has a working recovery partition please post a copy of their boot.ini file from their NC10 as i think this may be where my problem in accessing my recovery partition lies (see my post Recovery partition problem)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MemberMine still has the standard install, will that help? Where is the file?

Memberthank you Jez that would be a great help.
if you left click on start menu, right click my computer, left click properties, left click advanced, left click settings under startup and recovery section then left click edit next to “to edit the startup files manually….” this will open your boot.ini file into notepad. If you then copy and paste the contents of this file into a reply this will let me see your correct and working boot.ini file.
DO NOT make any changes to the file you open as this may screw your system.
Cheers in advance Jez

Member[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /noexecute=optin /fastdetectAnd here is a nice technet link
EDIT: jez, the code feature is not working right, it totally break the forum layout.March 5, 2009 at 12:22 pm #185504COLIN10BC
Memberthanks Don, i will compare that to mine when i get home from work. Do you have a working recovery partition (accessed by F4) as i was expecting some sort of reference to this in the boot.ini file ?
and thanks for the tech link too.

MemberMy original EISA (Recovery) Partition is in place and F4 Recovery Solution is working.
I did a clean install of WinXP Home from the CD Samsung included with the NC10.
As far as i understand the F4 Samsung Recovery is started by a modified bootsector on the HDD and not by a modified boot.ini.
Therefore, as long as you keep the HDD bootsector and the EISA Partition unchanged you should be able to use the Recovery Solution no matter how often you reinstall XP.

Memberwell that’s my boot.ini theory out the window then Don.
My system appears then to have made changes to the HDD bootsector and/or EISA Partition when reinstalling. Is there a way to correct these to allow access via F4 or have i done too much damage ?

ParticipantIf you have installed another Operating System such as Windows Vista/7 or a Linux distribution then the MBR (Master Boot Record) will have been overwritten.
It *may* be possible to fix this by using someone else’s original MBR and then replacing the boot loader part in yours with the boot loader part in the original. However you cannot simply use someone else’s MBR as it contains information specific to the partition structure of your hard drive.
You can setup the Windows bootloader to chain boot the recovery partition, which allows you to select the recovery partition at startup, however this does not enable F4 to work or allow backups to be made using the Samsung Recovery 3 software.

MemberYes i did install and then uninstall Ubuntu.
So are you saying in simple terms that if i do alter the boot.ini to add a reference to the recovery partition that this will give me two options at boot up – Windows XP or Recovery Partition. Or would FIXMBR work if i ran it from the recovery console from within XP.
Cheers for everyones efforts.

That’s correct, though I can’t remember how to set that up in Windows. Though it won’t enable F4 or backups to work.[quote1236260714=COLIN10BC]Or would FIXMBR work if i ran it from the recovery console from within XP.[/quote1236260714]
Fixmbr will not help as it will just replace whatever you have at the moment with the standard NTLDR boot loader, not the customised version. -
