May 12, 2009 at 4:42 pm #162245Siddas MemberHi All. I have searched the net and can’t seem to get an answer to my question – nevermind a step by step guide. I tried using the built in wizard but it just got stuck. Anyway – my question – I have my desktop wired through a netgear wireless router – it in turn is then connected by a LAN cable to a Virgin broadband modem. My netbook connects to the wireless router via wi-fi. Is there a way that I can view the contents of my desktop (and the peripheral storage units) on my netbook – and vice-versa? It would just make transfer of files easier than keep using a memory stick to shift stuff between the two. If it is possible is there a noddy guide I could follow anywhere? Thanks in advance for any help. May 12, 2009 at 5:53 pm #191367jeepers01 ParticipantThere is a video here that should get you going ipconfig /all in a dos box on each machine gives you the IP addresses make sure you have the same workgroup name on each machine Hope this helps May 12, 2009 at 7:29 pm #191357Siddas MemberThanks for the swift reply Jeepers. Sadly no joy – the problem I have is that neither computer seems to be able to pick the other one up on the network. Am I right in thinking that they should ‘see’ each other or is my connection set up not allowing it? I should have said earlier that the desktop is wired via LAN to the router. May 12, 2009 at 7:53 pm #191354TCMuffin MemberTry disabling the firewalls on both computers – if that works set up rule for the connection and re-enable your firewalls. Just to clarify – what OSes are you using on both computers 😕 May 12, 2009 at 8:10 pm #191358Siddas MemberI tried doing that but again no joy. Both are running XP home edition. I have just tried to connect them via bluetooth and again they won’t play! May 12, 2009 at 8:13 pm #191368jeepers01 ParticipantIf you have found out the IP addresses of each machine. Call them machine A and Machine B for this example
Open dos box on say machine A
Ping 192.168.0.20 (substitute with B IP address)
if ok do repeat from B to AStart|Run \192.168.xxx.xxx
You should see the other machine shared folder
(you did remember to share a folder on both machines)find out the real machine names (eg. will be something like samsungpc
Then Start|Run \ samsungpcgo to my network paces and hopefully your up and running! Check your firewalls to ensure they are not blocking
Add to zones under firewall in zone alarm for example 2 entries with IP adresses of machine A and BDo report back. hope this helps May 12, 2009 at 8:30 pm #191359Siddas MemberHi again Jeepers. Ok – I pinged both machines with 100% success rate. If I do the run command I get the message ‘No network provider accepted the given network path’. This happens on both machines. On my desktop when I share the folders it works fine – but on the netbook I get the message ‘An error occured while trying to share (folder name). The server service is not started. The shared resource was not created at this time’. Any further ideas? May 12, 2009 at 8:46 pm #191369jeepers01 ParticipantWell the ping proves each machine can see each other, so your nearly there! If you are sure you have the correct IP addresses you should at least be able to see the desktop from the sammy? Not sure about those error messages, usually comes back Error connecting to Network or such like
Are you logged in as Administrator, not through an account without admin rights?May 12, 2009 at 8:56 pm #191360Siddas MemberYep – the IP is correct. Double checked it. There shouldn’t be a dot after the last number should there? Or any gaps? I have tried pretty much every combination, but it isn’t seeing the desktop at all. Should it show up in ‘my computer’ or am I missing a way of viewing it if it is available. Tried right clicking on Start and Explore. Thanks for spending the time to help. It is much appreciated. May 12, 2009 at 9:09 pm #191370jeepers01 ParticipantIP format is 192.168.0.24 no dot after or gaps
You know its right if it pinged okConcentrate on getting the sammy to connect to the PC first as you have sharing issues with the sammy Start then Run \192.168.0.24 (put your numbers here)
Should result in the PC shared folder openingIf It can’t connect, disable both firewalls and try again
Assuming this works make sure workgroup names on each machine are the same. This is very important else it won’t work as a networkMay 12, 2009 at 9:22 pm #191361Siddas MemberI have tried the run \192.168.1.2 and still get the ‘No network..’ message again. I don’t get a shared folder opening. Both firewalls are off. How do I check the workgroup name? I am sure I have been asked on each machine to give it a name and have done – but best be sure. May 12, 2009 at 10:03 pm #191371jeepers01 Participantstart|control panel|system|computer name| then workgroup is shown. select change if needed.
I think its best to observe case sensitive rules in the names. ie. make them exactly the sameIf 192.168.1.2 is definately the PC IP address which you pinged successfully it should work I saw some recommendations regarding your strange error messages Solution for “No network provider accepted the given network path”. You may need to explore this one to get it working. You mentioned about a server error which is puzzling. Shut down anything not needed and also in the system tray. I assume you don’t have a server running in the background Have you tried Run \computer name which you get from the workgroup screen on your PC. Again type it in exactly matching case sensitive and no blank spaces BTW if you Run \(your sammy IP address) you should see the shared folder on the sammy pop up. Just so you now what to expect when it works. Make sure you enter a share name and check the box “share this folder on the network” There are some good tips at Troubleshooting TCP/IP Networks. Read also the link under point 9 on the page as well May 12, 2009 at 10:55 pm #191355TCMuffin MemberAlso worth ensuring that both computers share a username and password 😕 May 13, 2009 at 6:44 am #191374stormy MemberSiddas, try changing the workgroup name on both PCs, your netbook and desktop, restart both, then change them back to your prefered workgroup name. I had similar problems networking my netbook with my desktop and doing that seemed to “reset” something somewhere. I could at one stage ping the desktop from the netbook and the desktop would access the netbook but not vice versa. Worth a try if all else fails. May 13, 2009 at 7:15 am #191362Siddas MemberHi. Thanks for taking the time to help folks. For some odd reason I can’t change the workgroup name on the netbook. It is greyed out and I can’t find any other way of rectifiying this. I have nothing else running, apart from Avast and the battery manager, as I have it stripped down to bare minimum for services running. I am getting the sneaky feeling my netbook is the problem!! I tried the link and the scannow thing but again nothing.
