MemberOn my old xda orbit, I could set up a local network connection and use the phone’s 3g connection to surf while on my nc10 using a Bluetooth connection.
Does anyone know if this sort of thing is possible with my new HTC Desire?
Thanks in advance

MemberIf you have the Android 2.2 update then it incorporates WiFi Hotspot functionality, which will effectively turn your Desire into a wireless access point that you can connect the NC10 to and use the 3G connection.
If you have an unbranded handset then this update is already available and you should have been offered it by now. If you have a network branded one then you’ll have to wait for them to release their version of the update, which should be soon, and hope they don’t disable this functionality as most networks don’t allow “tethering” as it’s called without additional fees.

MemberVertigo’s right, that’s how i’m doing it currently, now i’ve got 2.2 (Froyo) on the Desire (and it works very well)
Previously though, on 2.1, as long as you have htc Sync installed on the netbook, when you connect with the usb cable the phone gives you the option of connecting to htc sync, or sharing the network connection, choose that, give it a minute and you are connected through to the 3G. on the sammy.
(previous to that i was using an iphone sim and a WWAN module in the sammy, but the 12month free data ran out 🙁 , still works with normal PAYG data sims, but why have 2 accounts when i’m already paying for it on the desire.)

MemberI have a HTC Desire on Orange. It currently has Android 2.1 and Orange has prevented tethering via HTC sync. I suspect the same will be true when Orange release Android 2.2.
I have tried the Android Aps PDAnet and EasyTether, both of which work well with my NC10 (you have to use a client on the NC10). They have free versions which work for email, http and vpn traffic. You have to upgrade to the paid version to access https websites but its only a few dollars.

The swine! – i’d be inclined to root it and stick on one of the many 2.2 froyo roms that are doing the rounds…
currently Vodaphone don’t block tethering, although they had a good stab at pushing out a ridiculous rebranding/phone crippling update in place of the 2.2 update recently, rolled back due to a huge amount of outcry from just about every customer effected.
slightly off topic, but if you are going to get a Desire, or any of the new smart phones – don’t buy the phone through the network providers, they are all Evil / Useless 😉
