MemberDoes anyone know if you can fit a Broadcom Mini PCI Express card in a Samsung N140 without having to lose the wifi card. Does it have a extra mini pci express slot or anything like the NC10 did..
Regards

ParticipantAll Samsung netbooks have a spare mini-PCIe slot, most do not have the connector soldered in place. This is the case for the N140.
One difference is that you cannot use the slot meant for the WiFi card in the N140 for the Broadcom decoder card, as the slot for the WiFi card is for half sized mini-PCIe cards.

MemberThanks Alfihar..
Does anyone know of anyone from this site thats managed to solder a 2nd mini pci express port on to a sammy n140 motherboard then, or is the spare port space half size too?
I’m wondering if i should return my n140 to the shop as im really disopointed with the video quality. Mine only has 1GB of ram but it just maxing out on ram and cpu the second I try to watch a video or yourtube.
its a shame as i managed to get the 250gb hard disk version with a 6 cell battery, its just two days old now.
I hoped it was going to be possible to use the broadcom card…What a shame

The spare port is full sized, or rather the space is designed to take a full sized card as the standoff is missing as well (though this isn’t really a big deal).[quote1265819146=ukez]I’m wondering if i should return my n140 to the shop as im really disopointed with the video quality. I’m surprised that you’re maxing out the RAM when trying to watch a video.HD videos, especially youtube ones for the most part aren’t going to work without the decoder card. However you may want to try the following:-
1) If you are running Windows 7 make sure that the processor isn’t limited to 50% while on battery.
2) install both Flash and Ad blockers, having some Flash adverts running at the same time can slow things down a lot.
3) With your browser open and selected press [Fn] + [F8] until you activate the speed mode.
You could also make sure you aren’t running anything processor hungry in the background (McAfee), or even the various auto-updaters/auto-runners which come with some programs (Quicktime, Adobe reader etc..).

MemberAlfihar 🙂
Admittedly I’ve still got McAfee running, but I was planing on removing it and installing Microsoft Essential Security software, like ive got on my laptop.
Other than that the only software running really is Windows 7 and the little application for the touch pad.
When I go to the likes of Youtube or BBC Iplayer to watch standard flash videos, I was aware the HD streams would’nt work and wasn’t concerned due to the netbook not having a HD resolution screen.
But the n140 still struggles to play standard format flash at 25 – 30FPS without frame drop and tearing effect especially when run full screen.
I instantly notice this as I deal with commercial video for a living so its so annoyingly obvious to me. I tried the Fn + f8 key thing and it did kinda works, but not! (Thanks though!)
This is my first netbook, I cant believe how much I’ve just paid for something that has the power and the feel of an old Pentium 2 or something.
I expected it to be able to cope with the basics i.e. web browsing and full flash compatibility (at standard video format) considering nearly every website you go to now days has some form of flash animation.
I’m going to remove mcafee and try my luck again… I wont hold my breath, I can see myself returning this to the shop if im honest as by the time I buy another 2GB the cost of this system is not far off what the dual core atoms or entry level laptops are going for.

Memberukez,
Do you still have Samsung bloatware installed? I removed all mine apart from the Recovery software and my N110 runs 10x better than when I first bought it. (And I too was initially very disappointed with the apparent performance.)
Have you tried GMA Booster? (http://www.gmabooster.com/download.htm)

MemberWelcome to the forum ukez,
The link in Alfihar’s post which does not work is also in his signature, where it does work. As he suggests, have a look there before doing anything drastic.
I have no problems whatsoever watching Youtube vids on my NC10, so I am sure that your N140 ought to cope just as well.

MemberI’m going to check out your link. I took off Mcaffe by the way and performance has improved a bit, im using MS free one and it already seems a bit better.
Why oh why do all these companies load up new systems with such crap lol..??
Tony, is ultimate running any better on your net book? and did you notice any difference upping the ram to 2gb?
Thanks for your support , i’ll let you know how i get on. 🙂
Thanks

MemberHello, I’ve fitted a second mini pci-e connector on a N130 but I don’t know why it doesn’t work. My broadcom Crystal works fine in the wifi port but it is half size. I have test the wifi card and the Broadcom Crystal on the new port with any issue.
I don’t know if it needs some resistor or bridge.
Has someone any idea?
Sorry for my bad english.February 27, 2010 at 2:37 pm #210601tonytb
MemberHi ukez,
I had already installed my 2Gb RAM while I still had XP on my NC10, so I don’t really know what difference it makes with Win 7.
Ultimate is ‘heavier’ than Starter, so should be slower. I do think that it is slightly slower to use than my old XP, but I have all animations on, Aero and Peek etc. so that is to be expected I should think. I’m sure that if I trimmed down some effects it would feel as fast as XP did.
Overall I have some niggles with Win 7, but I did with XP too, so I’m not bothered. I doubt there’s the perfect OS out there.

Sorry for my bad english.[/quote1267282977]Welcome to the forumThis issue has been solved on the NC10 and the principles should apply to the N140 as I suspect the circuitry to be similar if not the same even though the N140 has a different motherboard layout.
The solution for the NC10 was to solder in missing 2x 100nF capacitors and some bridging for the slot 2 pci-e connector.
Full details can be found in this thread. Broadcom HD decoder working on soldered slot2
Please post pictures and details as other N140 users will no doubt be interested 🙂
Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

MemberI’m going to see on the backside of the motherboard and take some photos. I don’t know if I have those capacitors soldered.
