MemberI’ll be getting my NC10 tomorrow and want to run either Ubuntu UNR or Windows 7 RC. Which one will give me the best user experience on this hardware?
I am also installing 2 GB or ram as soon as it arrives.
I use both Ubuntu 9.04 and Vista SP2 on my desktops and laptops so I am familiar with both, just want to know what folks think runs best on the NC10. Factors such as perceived speed, driver support and so forth.
Thanks.

MemberI liked the Ubuntu UNR user interface and it seemed to boot pretty fast from a USB stick when I tried it.
But I believe there are still performance issues with the Intel Graphics chips. A workaround is detailed in this post;http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582
Also beware that installing Linux/Win7 will remove the custom MBR of the Samsung and hence prevent the FN4 recover feature from working,
Cheers

ParticipantThere is a nice third party repository for Ubuntu (should work with distros based on Ubuntu as well) which fixes a lot of minor things such as the wireless switch.
Also Mint 7 runs pretty well and is based on Ubuntu.

How about Plan 9?June 23, 2009 at 9:41 am #194662RUQRU
MemberThanks for comments. While I appreciate the history of modern computing, I’ll stay away from the retro OSs. BTW if I could get MVS 370 to run, I would!

MemberActually both Windows 7 and Mint 7 are working well on my NC10.
I suspect that W7 needs 2 GB RAM whereas MInt would probably get away with just 1 GB. Also, if you have some Windows software which you can’t live without then you may be better of with W7.

It won’t drive your hardware to its knees
It’s free with the system and it’s ready to please.(Yeah, it wasn’t one of the options given, but it’d be my choice. From the options, I’d try Win7 first. My next netbook/laptop will probably come with it, after all.)

MemberI have XP + Mint 7 (which is really nice, better than UNR IMHO…)

MemberAfter reading about all the tweaks needed to get UNR running I decided to go Windows 7 Ultimate. Runs great and I have a real nice NC10.
Thanks.

MemberI am running XP as well. I don’t like it enough to compose poetry about it, but it works just fine :~)

MemberFor the record, W7 runs perfectly with 1GB RAM, as I had that setup for a short while. Now I’m on 2GB. 😀

Thanks; I guess a song parody (or one verse of one, anyway) is a poem. It’s a bit obscure, but I was hoping someone over there would pick up on it. ::shrug::June 26, 2009 at 12:08 pm #194664RUQRU
MemberAfter a few days of running Windows 7 RC I have run into only one know problem. You Tube video is choppy. Other than that everything works great just be sure to load all the Samsung drivers:
[ from http://www.ademiller.com/blogs/tech/2009/05/windows-7-rc-on-the-samsung-nc10-netbook/ ]
# Easy Display Manager 2.1.10.1 – Manages display brightness. This seems to be working better on the RC. On the Beta it had some issues and would only brighten the screen when a key was pressed (not from mouse movement etc). My install seems to brighten the screen when either the touchpad or keyboard is used.
# Easy Battery Manager 3 3.2.1.8 – This will install an additional power plan “Samsung Optimized†which will hopefully improve the battery life. After install right click on the battery icon in the tray and make sure the right plan is selected. You may wish to edit the plan to set the processor speed when on battery power, this is set to 750MHz (half speed) by default.
# Synaptics touchpad Vista x86 driver this is version 12.2.11.0 (the first download on the page). It’s more recent than the one on Synaptics’ downloads site, I’m assuming its OEM specific
# Realtek HD Sound Drivers for Vista
# Numaga camera drivers 343.2001.4001.7 for XP
# Play Camera 2.0.0.15 for XP
# Two finger scrolling tool – After installing you can right-click on the tray icon and use the Settings dialog to configure the application to start with windows -
