MemberHi folks
I just got myself a Linksys WAG160N wireless N router/modem in an attempt to match my N510’s wireless N capability, although I’m wishing I’d stuck with my Netgear wireless G router 🙁
> I’m now getting 150mbps .. is this all I can expect?
> In my bedroom, I get no connection from the N510 although my desktop PC connects ok (and with the wireless G the N510 was fine too).
> When waking the N510 from sleep mode, I get a ‘limited connectivity’ connection (which is basically useless) and have to disconnect/reconnect in order to get a working connection. By comparision the Netgear wireless G would connect without issue, straight away.
Any help appreciated

MemberWell, in theory any N series router should work with your N510.
I replaced my overheating Netgear DG834N with a Cisco WAG 160N but returned it after a few days. Performance was disappointing and it often locked out local devices until a reset (presumably to allocate a new IP address). I subsequently found out that many others had had similar issues.
I replaced it with D-Link DSL 2740R which, though it won’t win any design awards, has excellent range and speed, and has proved a reliable complement not only to my N510 but to several laptops, printers and phones, too.

MemberThanks for your post. I was looking at the 2740R as a possibility. What connection speed should I expect? I thought that N was up to 300mbps..

802.11n can theoretically manage up to 600Mbit/s, though I think the fastest you’ll find today for the most part is 450Mbit/s.The maximum speed is determined by both the wireless access point and the wireless card and is limited to the slowest part. Where the number of antenna for receiving and transmitting as well as the number of spacial streams the card can handle limit the speed.
1 aerial = 150Mbit/s
2 aerials = 300Mbit/s
3 aerials = 450Mbit/sAdditionally the faster speeds are more likely to be obtained when using the 5GHz frequency with WPA2 encryption. Of which the stock N510’s card cannot use the 5GHz frequency.
So for example the card I have in my NC10 has a 3 x 3 x 3 (recieve aerials, transmit aerials, spacial streams) card capable of 450Mbit/s and can use the 5GHz frequency, however my router is a 2 x 2 x 2, so the maximum I can achieve is 300Mbit/s, though realistically I get up to around 270Mbit/s when close to the router, and more like 150Mbit/s during normal use.
I think that the Realtek card in the N510 can receive at 300Mbit/s and transmit at 150Mbit/s. Even though the chips spec sheet indicates that in certain configurations it can go higher.
As for what speed should you expect, if you have a strong signal you should get 300Mbit/s.
I don’t think that router scores particularly highly on range though. You may also need to set the channel width to 20/40 MHz instead of just 20MHz. This should be in the hardware properties of the wireless card.

Thanks very much 🙂Alfihar; interesting info there thanks! I might just sell the Linksys/Ciso and get the D-Link.
I checked the bandwidth it’s already 40mhz. I also messed with the channels and only succeeded in losing the connection to my desktop upstairs! I since reset to factory defaults and that fixed it, phew!January 22, 2010 at 11:02 pm #208776nodollaz
MemberWell I’ve still got the Linksys and now also a D-Link 2470-R running firmware v1.13.
The D-Link would not work on auto channel scan, I had to try each channel in turn to see what was best. It’s currently on 2 (2.147ghz) and I’ve tried several others but the range is no better than wireless G on my PC :O(

MemberI’ve just sent my N510 back to Samsung (due to the left hinge/casing coming apart) and asked them to test the wireless too. See what happens…
