Has anyone tried to install a mini-PCI SSD into the second mini-PCI slot on the NC10? My dream netbook would use a fast SSD for the OS and programs and a huge 2.5″ HDD for my data. These new SSD’s (which are as large as 128GB) would be perfect– if it works!A couple of posts recently have got me thinking about this today– but all of my Googling on this question have come up empty.
First, there is apparently a second mini-PCI slot hidden under the keyboard of the NC10. Liliputing today had a list of netbooks with a mini-PCI slot)– and a hint that some netbooks supported an SSD in that slot. This got me investigating and found that there’s a second mini-PCI slot and an extra USB port..
Second, a little more investigating led me to find that some SSD manufacturers are making mini-PCI versions that are fast enough to be the main drive. For instance, JKKMobile reviewed the RunCore SSD, which mimic either PATA and SATA drives but fit on tiny little mini-PCI cards.

The second slot isn’t under the keyboard, well it is… but to get access you take the underside off. If it’s an NC10 then the slot won’t have a connector (unless it’s an NC10SE I think, or one that came with mobile broadband), and so one would need to be soldered on.
The free usb slot is only free if the netbook doesn’t come with Bluetooth, if it does then the Bluetooth module will be attached to it.
As for whether an SSD would work, I think it would have to support USB/PCIe over mini PCIe and not PATA/SATA like in this thread where it didn’t work.
