Memberim not much of an expert but i’m upgrading my hard drive and what I know is that the operating system is on the original hard drive so if you need that then you need to image this original drive. creating an image of the drive is to create a .iso or similar file like you would find on a dvd-rom you can then burn this image to a disc for use with an external disc drive so when you plug your new hdd in you can boot up and still have an operating system.
of course this is different if you have an operating system on disk or usb which you would prefer to use.
I hope that made sense to you.

MemberK, thanks, I really computer illiterate, but am a quick leaner…I bought an external cd/DVD drive. The NC10 came with “system software media” which says it’s to restore the applications an drivers provided by Samsung if the don’t run properly…it also came with “system recovery media” for windows xp home edition. So…what next?

MemberYou can easily put the new hard drive into a USB enclosure, use a program like Acronis True Image, and clone your current hard drive to the new one. After this procedure, simply swap the drives, and the operation will be completely transparent, no reinstall…

MemberK didn’t get that last info in time…went to geek sqwad, since I hadn’t even started the thing yet, he said I could just swap them out, then use the recovery disk. Did that, but when it went through it got to “setup is starting windows”. Then a minute went by and it went to a blue screen with
Stop: c0000221 Unknown hard error

what do I do?September 23, 2009 at 7:52 pm #201777Alfihar
ParticipantHmm well here is the Microsoft article on the error:-
“STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error” or “STOP: C0000221 STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH” error message occursJust checking is this after you have installed Windows or during when you are first trying to install Windows off the cd?
You should be able to do what you want to do just fine. That is swap the hard drive then install Windows using the install disk.
Have you tried running the installation a second time?
What is the make and model of the new hard drive you’ve had installed?

MemberI just called geek squad again, I had installed the 2GB ram as well, she said replace the original ram and try again, did so, and started the recovery cd and same error message came up…so frustrated, any further help would be very much appreciated, but explain it like you’re talking to a three year old please

MemberSome system software is unique to the system, this is so you can not copy to multiple systems using one copy. (copyright)
your restore software may not recognise the new hardware.
I would buy an external USB hardrive enclosure, install your 320gb HD into it, use disk magic to image your 120gb HD, remove 120gb HD from nc10 and swap it with the 320gb HD with copied system now installed. Install this into nc10, boot up, hopefully now you should have your operating system on a 320gb HD.Matt.

I don’t think this is the issue, the Windows install disk provided with the NC10 is pretty much standard and will even work on other completely different computers, though it will request a licence key during installation. Though imaging from the old working drive to the new one may help fix the problem.Depending at what stage it blue screens it could be a problem with the new hard drive or the install disk.

MemberPerhaps you should try with the original HDD to see if it’s an internal hardware problem or not… Motherboard, SATA controller, etc. If it goes fine, then you can narrow it down to either the new HDD or the install disk, though the latter is unlikely.

MemberI reinstalled the 160GB 5400 rpm hard drive…it started up fine, registered the computer and all, then installed the new 2GB Ram, so that’s where I’m at, at least I have a working computer…not sure what to do next. Not sure if the new hdd is defective or what…don’t really know if I want to spend $60 for the harddrive enclosure…what else would it be good for after the initial imaging?
