I just want to second Alfihar’s comments. I recently btreated myself to a iPod Touch (32GB) and I’ve fallen in love with it! It was a replacement for an aging HP iPAQ hx2495 running Windows Mobile 5, and the difference in usability is night and day! I’m not into games, and I wanted a PDA for productivity.
The one thing I miss is an open operating system, and I detest Apple’s crippling of built in features such as the bluetooth. For example I wanted a GPS enabled marine navigation package , which I had on the iPAQ, but Apple has crippled the bluetooth so it will only talk to headphones. I’m not into “jailbreaking” so I’m stuck with what Apple will let me do.
In addition it’s annoying that the device has FM radio hardware installed but Apple has not seen fit to enable it (although there are strong rumors afoot that this is in the works).
The useful apps are great – but beware, a lot of them are useless. One of the problems is that you cannot get your money back from the Apps Store.
I see the Touch as a great adjunct to Sammy, not a competitor.

BTW – the email app is great!DerekMemberDid you notice on the Samsung site here that the NC110 is listed as having a maximum of 1 GB of system memory? Just to make sure I wasn’t interpreting the specs incorrectly, I went back to the NC10 specs, and sure enough they list the NC10 as having 2 GB max.
This seems like a giant step backwards if true!
DerekMemberI have a bunch of keys (d-e-r-4) that have a loud click (sometimes) and extra resistance. Also the left Alt key is spongy. I’m planning to send it back…
DerekMemberMr. Angry,
I have sorta lost touch, but running Garmin software with non-Garmin hardware has always been a major problem, and it used to be that it couldn’t be done – you had to buy their particular receiver. The issue was discussed a lot on the gpspassion forums… hereThe problem you describe is not a Sammy problem – it’s a Garmin web-site problem
DerekMemberIf you mean GPS navigation software, I have installed iNav’s iGuidance 4.0 for driving, and CoastalExplorer for marine navigation. Both work flawlessly…
I use a GlobalSat BT338 BT GPS receiver. No problems connecting.
DerekMemberHi tarofgaladriel,
I spent many hours searching for a skin for Rainlendar that wasn’t too busy. Tangoish is wonderfully clear on the small screen, and while it is somewhat plain-jane I really like it. As I said I changed the .xml script to make the events stand out more clearly at all screen angles (and with my cataracts).It’s a Rev 2 skin – TangoishMod.r2skin – and can be downloaded here.
To install – save to the desktop and simply drag on to Rainlendar. Then
1) Right-click -> Refresh
2) Right-click -> Options -> Skins and select it.
The Refresh step is important, otherwise Rainlendar won’t see the new skin.As far as ObjectDock is concerned – I purchased the Pro version – is it worth it? I’m not sure! It does let you have multiple docks with a few extra features…
Derek
ps – I will put the download info and an image in a new thread in the Applications forum in case anybody else is interested.DerekMemberSammy’s summer home:
Two ObjectDocks – normally on autohide – apps along the top, places on the left.
Clock is clocx – freeware with many faces
Calendar is Rainlendar with “Tangoish” skin that I customized to make events stand out more. (If you are interested in this skin let me know…)DerekMemberHibernate – simply because it is completely powered down, and I don’t have to worry about power drain. The few seconds of delay on resume doesn’t bother me at all – even with 2GB.
I have 3 laptops and use hibernate on them all…
I use stand-by on my desktops.DerekMemberFWIW – The Rocketfish gets terrible reviews on Amazon…
January 3, 2009 at 8:28 pm in reply to: Were you able to register your product on samsung.com? #178335DerekMemberI just registered, (USA site) and received an email back saying that I now had the 3 month free warranty extension!
DerekMemberVery interesting. I hadn’t realized that the Atom had two cores until this morning. I am debugging a build-your-own system I put together for my son for Xmas, and just to try a couple of things I modified Sammy’s boot.ini file to include the /sos switch (which displays the boot progress). I was surprised to see that it reported two processors.
Is it truly a dual core processor (I know it’s not Core-2 Duo)? That would be most excellent if true because Skype Hi-Res video conferencing requires a dual core processor.
p.s. (off topic) the problem I am looking at on my son’s system is that on booting, after the splash screen it sits for about 45 sec. (no disk activity, and a blank screen) before starting to load XP. I think it’s a SATA/IDE conflict. If anybody has any ideas….??? It’s more of an annoyance than a real bug.
DerekMemberI use Virtual Desktop Manager, which is one of the XP PowerToys. It gives you four virtual desktops on the task bar, Very useful with the limited real estate on Sammy’s screen.
Download and install, then right-click on the task bar, select Toolbars –> DeskTop Manager and four buttons will appear on the task bar.
DerekMemberIs there an uninstall option if you don’t like it?
DerekMemberIs there an uninstall procedure if you don’t like it?
DerekMemberTo answer my own question – they all work fine 🙂
