Can anyone tell me if it’s ok to use the gatekeeper pico pro on an NC10?
I’ve decided to buy myself a new netbook and have heard good things about the gatekeeper.
Anyone out there using a gatekeeper on their NC10?
Many thank.
Not used one for the simple reason, boot viruses. Someone tell me if I’m wrong but how does this protect you from boot sector viruses because I can’t see away that it will.
Basically, it make your boot sector read-only, and, if edited, will notify you. (Some BIOSes also have this function, look for “Boot Sector Virus Protection” or something similar.)
Thanks for that. I may take another look.
There is an option in the NC10’s BIOS to protect the boot sector. Not sure how well it works (or how it exactly works) as I’m pretty sure I had it turned on and still let me install GRUB, without any problems or warnings.
Not that that device in itself is going to protect you from viruses anyway (ones which are already on your computer, or on a memory card, encrypted download etc…). Although the bundled anti-virus software which you run on your computer will.
Personally the idea of plugging in a usb stick with an embedded mini computer just to scan network traffic (excluding encrypted traffic), seems like a bit of a waste unless you really want to maximise performance (if you remove your existing anti-virus software) or need corporate type security.
I wonder how much power it uses.
Anyway, it should be fine to use with the NC10
On the up side it’s quite cool to run Linux on a usb device the size of a memory stick.
What’s the BIOS on the NC10? Phoneix? AMBI?
It’s Phoenix and the option in the BIOS is “Fixed disk boot sector” with the options “Normal” or “Write Protect”.
