[quote1227261833=Wodball]
So I’m thinking about upgrading my NC10 (when I get it) to Pro myself. I was wondering about the card reader. The Samsung site didn’t have drivers for it. Does it just use the generic drivers on the XP Pro CD (I didn’t know XP had SDHC drivers!), or do I need to procure them from somewhere else? Also, if you reload the “Recovery Solution III” software, can you run it again to create a partition to recover your XP Pro installation? I’m just wondering in case I don’t have a chance to make a bootable 2GB XP Pro slipstreamed installation stick or if I don’t have access to my external DVD drive.

[/quote1227261833]The card reader drivers are included in one of the packages from the Samsung download site – it might be the chipset one although I’m not certain.
I did a clean install using a USB DVD drive but then installed Recovery Solution and made a back up of the clean install. You can’t write this to the hidden partition so I saved it to my second partition but because I left the hidden partition in place with the initial system back up, I now have two choices in the restore function to restore back to initial Samsung delivered state or my clean XP install.November 21, 2008 at 3:20 pm #168397dougpMemberdonka – look into downloading gPart and using that to erase the hidden partition and then extend your second partition, that way you don’t lose space.

[/quote1227282046]Thanks for the tip but I have a few tools to do that anyway. I left the hidden partition there on purpose as I was hoping I could write my second backup to it as well but it can’t be seen from the Samsung application apart from restoring. I did think about deleting the recovery partition when I was doing creating the partitions for the fresh install but figured I could use it to do a ‘factory’ reset if I wished e.g. for selling. I’m sure I’ll end up just doing another clean in a month’s time and blowing it away then but we’ll see after I spend some time with it. I think this netbook will be a keeper. Only thing I dislike is the trackpad but I will get used to it in time I’m sure.
November 21, 2008 at 5:00 pm #168398dougpMemberI personally use a bluetooth mouse – the trackpad isn’t bad, just really short.
November 21, 2008 at 5:11 pm #168390RsaeireMemberI also plan on getting a mouse as I cannot stand that touchpad!
One thing I noticed is that the touchpad isn’t depressed like the one on my laptop, so I’m constantly moving my finger over the surface of the laptop instead of the touchpad. I’m laughing to myself now thinking how funny the whole situation is, but it isn’t funny when you’re struggling to move the cursor and wonder why it’s stopped moving, only to look down and find your finger skimming along the surface of your laptop like a fool! lol

[/quote1227448423]You need to install EasyDisplay Manager application which gives you this.

November 23, 2008 at 3:13 pm #168401adatay92MemberI’m not a NC10 owner yet (hopefully next week) which is why I ask this question.
If I do a clean install of Win XP Pro (including deleting the hidden recovery partition) will I be able to reset to factory default if i want to sell it later?
Really, the question i’m asking is… does the NC10 come with a Samsung XP Home CD that I can use later to reinstall XP home?

[/quote1227472472]No it doesn’t. You would need to keep the recovery partition in place to do the factory restore.
November 23, 2008 at 9:43 pm #168402adatay92MemberHmmm not really the answer I wanted but thanks anyway. Looks lke I will have to load XP Pro and leave the 6gb partition there doing nothing.

In fact mine came with an XP Home recovery disc, with that you can do a clean install 🙂
A factory restore is somewhat different, goes it sets back all the garbage that comes preinstalled when you bought it. First thing i did was removing that annoying macafee prog. But maybe you need the factory restore for warranty purposes?November 24, 2008 at 8:50 am #168395donkaMemberYou shouldn’t need the factory restore for warranty reasons; you should be entitled to put any legal OS or software on your laptop (apart from BIOS) – the warranty should be there to cover hardware.
November 27, 2008 at 8:23 am #168406blueheavenMemberI finally managed to boot XPPro Unattended from External memory without wiping any partitions. It works great if you install it the right way on your external memory…
First of all you don’t need an USB stick. I used a 2GB Sandisk MicroSD Card fitted in a Sandisk MobileMate MicroSD Reader which you can find here.
Card must be no greater then 2GB.There’s a program to help you install it, follow all instructions and your fine. It’s called USB_MultiBoot_10. You can find a link to the program on this page. It contains all info you need and some links to other tutorials and faqs.
Preparation:
Change to boot order in the NC-10 bios to boot from USB first.
USB device no greater then 2GB with decent speed.
Copy all content from XPPro installation disc to a folder on your drive. I used an image of XPPro SP3 unattended and mounted that in DaemonTools.
Do not use spaces in foldernames, create folder on C: and start USB_Multiboot from C:.
You have to reformat your usb device, there’s a program in the USB_Multiboot package for that.Once again everything is explained on the site i linked to earlier (it can be slow) and the program takes you to the install step by step.
November 27, 2008 at 10:11 pm #168400WodballMemberHere’s a question…
I ordered my NC10 and I’m going Pro. However, I am still hesitant about slipstreaming SP3 into my SP2 because there have been issues with high definition audio. Do you guys who install XP SP3 have no problems with sound, or do you have to install a hotfix from Microsoft to get it working?
