MemberRunning Server 2008 as a workstation on a netbook??? Blasphemy you say?? Well, if you google it you will see at least a few folks (including some Microsoft staff) suggest that Server 2008 is the best desktop OS Microsoft had made yet!
While I’m not here to convince anyone, I do want to say that install from a USB thumbdrive went flawlessly and it seems to work with all of the Vista drivers out there so no problems with device support. As Server 2008 is componentized (like windows 7) you need to install a few features to make this appear like you would like. The “desktop experience” feature brings the visuals up to parity with vista while the “wireless lan service” enables wifi. Having not spent much time with Vista (I switched to Mac’s slightly before Vista’s release) I’m completely satisfied with performance (running office) and the OS seems very responsive (certainly as much so as XP). With the caviots that some apps are not compatable (due to system checks) and you must look around a bit for virus and disk editing software, I’m overall very pleased!
This is really an exercise in having fun and if not for the fact that I have a spare license for server 2008, I would not have bothered to do this but…
Oh, and I have this co-existing with an install of XP pro that I migrated from a VMware virtual machine. Loving the NC10 as a mini-me laptop.

MemberWhat did you use for drivers for the bluetooth? I’m installing it now 🙂 Had some serious issue with the wifi until I realized there was a wireles lan service that needed to be installed…

MemberThe standard vista drivers work fine but you need to modify some inf and sys files so that they will install on server. You can do it all in notepad but it takes a few minutes to track down the files.
The instructions I followed are from here:
http://www.gilkirkpatrick.com/Blog/post/Installing-the-Microsoft-Bluetooth-Stack-on-Windows-Server-2008.aspxjust make sure you use NTx86…3 instead of NTamd64…3
After following the above instructions the bluetooth works great! I’m using a logitech mouse and the new apple bluetooth keyboard (which strangely works great under Server but has install problems in XP…go figure).

MemberTried 08 but back to 03 again. Really cant find another OS which satisfies my needs (saucy) as much as Server 03 does. May have compatiility problems with some stuff but is fast and sturdy.
How do you find start up…that was my main gripe really.
