MemberNew to the forum and to the NC10. I have been unable to connect to my Wifi and I am really pulling my hair out. I came across this discussion. I have a DG834G v2 for which I just upgraded the firmware to the most recent for that hardware and I cannot connect to WiFi. No problem with broadband cable but my Wifi, despite being able to see the network, and tell me I have a strong signal…will not connect. I get the “limited or no connectivity” message. I use AOL for ISP and I am concerned that if I switch routers, it might not be compatible with either the NC10 or AOL.
Is there another thread I could be directed to about this? The NC10 for me was about portability and I am very disappointed aftger having spent 5 hours solid yesterday trying to sort things out.
I bought from private party, and found out that his warranty is not transferable. Just a warning to others.
Thanks

First off I own (well actually that one is my parents) a Netgear DG834G v2 (running the latest firmware) and can connect my NC10 to it without any issues (this is with the NC10’s original wireless card). Are you using something like MAC address filtering? What kind of encryption are you using?
As long as you know the connection details you should be able to use any other compatible modem router. If you are concerned at worst you can connect another router to your DG834G (probably turn off DHCP on the new one) and connect through that.

Are you able to connect via wifi at other locations? If so, then I would follow Alfihar’s suggestions as the problem is probably a router settings problem and not a computer hardware problem. I have probably used 40 different wifi access points over the past four months and have not had a problem accessing via wifi with my NC10. Good luck.

Best damn router I have ever had. I have had 3 Linksys routers, 2 belkins (including the N1 Vision), an Asus, Motorola, 3 Netgears.
The only one that has been rock solid and reliable is the D-Link. I highly reccomend it.

MemberThanks Alfiher and dockehr,
I spent quite a bit of time with my router settings. At the suggestion of Samsung tech, I changed my encryption from wep 128 to wpa and then back. Nc10 still didn;t connect, but I lost one of my two laptops which do connect with no problems. I had to do a system restore on that one to get it to connect. The other laptop is an macbook. I don’t have filtering turned on.
I’ve only had the netbook since yesterday morning and haven’t had a chance to find a wifi hotspot elsewhere. I plan to, to see if the problem persists. Samsung tech did’t think it was a motherboard problem because I can see the wireless network.
Thanks for letting me know that your Netgear router works with it. It was the Samsung tech who told me that it might be the problem.I even checked with AOL in case they limit the number of devices on wifi but that wasn’t an issue.
thanks again!

ParticipantYou may want to start from the basics. Reboot your router and disable encryption completely (just temporarily while you try to sort out the problem), then try and connect.
It should not have been necessary to do a system restore to get the connection back on your other laptop.
The amount of possible users connected by WiFi at any one time to a single access point is limited, though it should be a lot more than 3. At-least 10+ depending on the access point.
Personally I don’t use WEP anymore as it’s very easy and quick to crack, it’s only a deterrent for opportunist users. It’s better than nothing though. Unfortunately though there are still a few devices which only support WEP (I’m looking at you Nintendo DS Lite).

I did exactly that yesterday..I think. My head hurts 🙂 Samsung tech did mention updating bios, and I saw the new thread on the new bios update. I think I will try that too. Talk about a crash course on the netbook! Is it possible to reset the netbook to original software and settings without using the recovery discs? I don’t have an external CD drive. As it was previously owned, I was thinking restoring factory programs and settings might be a good idea. Seller might have, but I don’t know.

ParticipantIf you press F4 at startup you should be able to restore without needing to use the discs.
I don’t think the BIOS update will help, though I guess it’s worth installing anyway.

I almost feel like Alfihar and I are tag teaming you!! Anyway, I am using a Netgear WGR614v7 router at my house. I have 3 Toshiba laptops in addition to the NC10. Sometimes I’ll have three computers accessing my router at the same time with no problems. On your NC10, as basic as it may be, have you actually enabled the NC10 to access the router. Sometimes I actually disable it and I will get the “no or limited connectivity” notice. Also, have you maintained the same “workgroup” name for the NC10 as you have for your other two laptops? Can you access the internet thru an ethernet cable from your NC10 to your router? Have you accessed the knowledge base/FAQ web page specifically for your DG834Gv2 router? Sorry, to beat on the “basics” dead horse, but one has to start somewhere. And finally, get that NC10 out to a wifi hotspot and the ability or inability to access the internet thru a public access point would perhaps determine for once and for all if it’s a router problem or a NC10 problem. If you’re able to resolve your problem please let us know regardless of whatever the outcome is so that we can all learn from this situation. Good luck.

MemberDear Alfihar and dockehr
Problem solved. It is so simple…it is worth remembering.
At the office today, we had a router problem and the gentleman that came in to fix it, got into a conversation with me about my connectivity issues. Amongst other things, he recommended that I try the long pass key rather than the shorter passphrase to log onto the network.
I removed the network, the the system find it and ask for the logon info. I used the 26 alphanumeric pass key..and voila!
I am thrilled. I love the netbook and wanted to really start making it mine, but couldn’t until I had this licked. I will be sticking around as I find the discussions interesting and helpful and most importantly, people like you so generous with their help and suggestions.
So remember…after asking if the WLAN is turned on…then ask about the password 🙂 Hope that might help any others having problems.
PS In hindsight I remember that I had the same issue with my husband’s mac but it was so long ago, that it had slipped my mind.

MemberHi Alfihar
Thanks for the F4 tip. I think I might do that, just to get a clean start. Once I personalise the netbook, I’m not going to want to wipe it!

Glad to read that your problem is behind you and thanks for sharing your solution. I don’t use encryption, so I would have been of no use in solving that problem. Enjoy that NC10.

MemberHi there from Italy!
I’ve a 3COM OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 11g Router, and I can’t have a working connection. From time to time it connects and works perfectly, but very often NC10 detects the network and tries to connect without being able to get an IP address.
I’ve no MAC address filtering or any other firewall settings, and I just use WPA-PSK with TKIP. If I disable it, the connection seems having no problem.
The driver version is 7.6.1.210, and I’m using Windows as “Wi-Fi manager”. Should I use the Atheros tool instead? The strange issue is that I’ve just tried to use a different router, a DLINK, and the result is the same: in both cases it seems that WPA-PSK causes troubles to the connection.
What can I do? I don’t want to remove WPA and become a “free internet provider” in the neighbourhood! 🙂
Ciao!
