Just curious as to the OS’s people have used.
I used to be very Windows based but over the years I’ve gone over to other OS’s.
Windows wise this is how I went on my home computers:-
DOS + Windows 2.1 (around 20 years ago) > Windows 3.1 > Windows 95 > Windows 98 > Windows 98SE > Windows XP > Windows Server 2003 > Windows Vista > Windows Server 2008
I never really used 2003, Vista or 2008 much as by that point I was using other OS’s for day to day use.
The glory days for me were with Windows 95, I remember installing masses of game demos, playing Dungeon Keeper to the small hours of the morning and browsing the internet (Compuserve) on a 33.6K modem.
Linux wise I first started using Linux when I wanted to try and get into programming almost 6 years ago, back then I didn’t know how to dual boot so I had two hard drive caddies so I could switch drives to use either Windows 98SE or Red Hat 9. Although I have tried most major distributions these are the ones I primarily used, you may see a pattern:-
Red Hat 9 > Fedora Core 1 > Fedora Core 2 > Fedora 8 > Fedora 9 > Fedora 10
The gaps are when I was back using Windows XP as my laptop didn’t run Linux well back then.
Apple OS X would be one of the OS’s I’ve used the least as I first started using it around 4 years ago when I bought my first Apple product, a Mac Mini G4 after reading about it in a magazine and marvelling over it’s size.
10.3 Panther > 10.4 Tiger > 10.5 Leopard
OS X Leopard is my main OS of choice at the moment, alongside Fedora 10 Linux.
I’ve played around with other OS’s on my home computers and used a variety at work and university, though not enough to say that I’ve really got used to any of them.
So what has everyone else used?
January 25, 2009 at 12:23 am #181253avserviceMemberWhoa! Take me back.
I think I started using OS’s with Dos 3?
Then of course the breakthrough 5.0Then went to GeoWorks as an alternative to Windows but then I had to cave and run Windows.
Went through and OS2 phase and then back to Microsoft. Now I really use OS X if I can but I have to use Windows for Work but in general I will use a MAC.
I guess for longevity though Palm OS as I carried a Palm Phone for years every waking moment until recently when I went CrackBerry.
There is just a lot to be said for a computer that is really always with you as a Smart Phone can be.
I only wish I could find replacements for a few Palm Programs in the BlackBerry world.

January 25, 2009 at 12:49 am #181244AlfiharParticipantYou know I completely forgot about the various PDA’s and smart phones I used to use and their OS’s. The first proper PDA I owned was a Palm M100 back around 8 years ago.
Palm M100 > Psion Revo (Symbian EPOC) > Compaq iPAQ 3950 (Windows Pocket PC 2002) > Palm LifeDrive > Nokia N90 (Symbian) > Apple iPhone
I remember managing to flash my iPAQ’s ROM to install Linux on it, it didn’t work very well.
GeoWorks looks interesting, at that time I was very Windows based and didn’t really get to try any other OS’s, then again I wasn’t that experienced back then and it was the family computer I was messing around with.

Anyone have the misfortune of using Windows ME?
[/quote1232969982]I had it! I actually quite liked it. iirc that was where Windows started getting more media aware. I know it had a bad rep for stability but it was OK for me. I was using it until XP SP2.
Anyone remember XP before SP2?! Yikes!
