im thinking of using this in a dual boot with XP until i can make my mind up. Are there any major differences as far as speed and performance are concerned. Also what is the gaming like on the two and also driver support?
December 14, 2008 at 5:06 pm #175644soutthpawMemberwell according to Samsung, they highly advise against running vista as they do not make the drivers to support the system…
Vista is gonna die a quick death…it will be the biggest flop OS ever made… there is a reason XP SP3 was made and why windows 7 is being fast tracked…..heh! personally don’t see any reason to “upgrade” XP does everything I need it to… Windows 7 would need to have 100% XP backwards compatibility for me to consider changing in the futureDecember 14, 2008 at 5:56 pm #175640AlfiharParticipantDrivers are no problem with Vista, everything works fine for me. If you read through the thread on Vista here, there are links for all the drivers you need.
So far performance is good, I can’t really comment on gaming much but Guild Wars and WoW play, albeit slowly (I’m going to install some older games at some point). Vista overall feels a bit faster than XP (which I no longer have on the system), though I don’t have any benchmarks to back this up.

This is one of the reasons why I use virtual machines.December 16, 2008 at 7:23 pm #175645saureyMemberHow is Vista battery life treating you?

[/quote1229461642]I’m not sure you know what you’re talking about – Vista has been far better to me than the early years of XP. It got a lot better after SP1 too. If you want a big OS flop, I suggest you take a look at the history of ME or Bob. If Vista had released with the filesystem it was supposed to, it’d be blowing XP completely out of the water.
Oh, and no driver support? Hmm, works GREAT here. Just as fast/snappy as my T7250 w/ 2GB of RAM and an x1700 mobility.
December 16, 2008 at 10:59 pm #175639GhostfuryMemberI’m searching for the best personal OS experience. Now I have a tripleboot (XP, Vista and Ubuntu 8.10). All have their advantages, but I think I’m sticking with Vista Ultimate system for now. Most of my time I’m working in Vista. Everything just feels snappier than XP even with Aero on. I’m also experiencing better wifi connection and battery in Vista.
December 17, 2008 at 12:30 am #175646saureyMemberGhostfury, Can you benchmark Battery Life between XP and Vista and document? I would Soopa appreciate the info.
Also, what’s the Fan difference on xp vs vista with Aero? I remember when I upgraded my Vaio to Vista from XP it’s fan went crazy. I am curious as to your experience with that.

December 17, 2008 at 5:08 pm #175635ChirimollaMemberI think that Vista’s actually a very good operating system. It works wonderfully on my NC10, and drivers for it were not difficult to find. See the Vista thread for more info.
December 17, 2008 at 7:09 pm #175647saureyMemberChirimolla,
Did you notice more fan noise with vista?

I notice very little fan noise with Vista (the almost continuous hum of the hard drive is worse), at-least no more than with XP. Battery life also seems to be pretty similar, though I don’t have any stats to back that up.Oh and I have updated the BIOS and Aero is enabled.
December 18, 2008 at 10:45 pm #175642zwiebugMemberrunning vista sp1. response time is very quick, can’t tell if xp would be any faster. battery lasts 5-6 hours. fan noise…thats a tricky one…it comes up quite often. don’t know if it is due to vista or the bios upgrade. overall i am very satisifed with vista. had to upgrade the ram to 2gb, though, i think it helps improving performance

[/quote1229667831]I would have to agree with you. I am running Vista Ultimate on my NC10 and before that I felt like I was using my work laptop with XP on it.
January 10, 2009 at 4:58 pm #175648maxlawbrMemberHello,
I’m from Brasil, and bought a NC10 blue in my vacation.
Vista works very well to me, better than my old lenovo 3000 V100 notebook, I’m with a 320GB HDD 7200 RPM and 2GB RAM 800mhz.
I have 2.7 in Vista Performance, but only because I have 2.7 Gaming Graphic.
But I like to know what I have to do to keep the Fn + F8 working. Is that possible?
Thanks a lot,
Max

Hi! I have Windows 7 build 7000 on my NC10 right now, but I’m contemplating switching to Vista as my Chessbase 10 software keeps on crashing. Regarding your comment above, I wonder if you have installed the Magic Keyboard and Easy Display Manager softwares from Samsung? Because I thought that you can have the Fn+F8 functionality once you install these. Can you please elaborate as I have to take this into consideration if I will or will not install Vista. Thank you.

I have found a workaround regarding Chessbase 10. Apart from some apps not yet working on Windows 7, overall I am impressed with the new OS, to the point that I cannot imagine going back to Vista or XP for that matter. I was more convinced of this after installing Windows 7 on my Samsung Q1U and feeling pleasanlt satisfied with its operation.
