You and me both. But I guess that’s the price of being an early adopted, but still those moves by manufacturers can leave a bad taste. Reminds me of the iPhone where some of my friends are locked into expense longterm deal with the early models and much better ones game along very very quickly! In the short term I am happy that the NC10 does evrything I wanted but the one wishlist item is 3G. I suppose one advantage of the dongle is that when my home broadband connection goes down I guess the dongle can be slipped into my desktop machine?

The point for me, in this whole situation, is that I want to have the option to use or not to use, depending on my needs, and not to have my usage dictated by a company, just because they wanted to be more efficient and use the same plastic moulding for a possible revision 1.0 and revision 1.1 of the NC10.November 20, 2008 at 3:58 pm #168943jonbadMemberNew and improved versions will always come out so you can’t complain about them doing that I don’t think. Ultimately if you want your netbook now, then you get what’s available. If you want it in 6 months time it’ll be a different kettle of fish, perhaps the same shell but with different inners and OS (and maybe 3G).
No one’s forced to buy a netbook “NOW” and if you want extra features it’s just a matter of waiting.November 20, 2008 at 4:16 pm #168947RsaeireMember[quote1227197561=jonbad]

I agree to a point with your comment. I for one do not buy an item and then cry foul when a new version is out in 4-6 months time. My issue would be if, like I mentioned in my previous post, Samsung release a new version in January with, for example, internal 3G, and there is no way for the NC10 I bought to be upgraded to match the specifications of the new NC10.In such a short time frame, I cannot imagine Samsung shooting themselves in the foot like that, as a lot of users will feel extremely short-changed.
November 21, 2008 at 7:12 am #168955dougpMemberWhat keyboard software are you guys using for the hotkeys? I tried the Samsung stuff, but it didn’t function – maybe because of no profile, not quite sure.
November 21, 2008 at 9:35 am #168948RsaeireMemberAfter wiping my XP Home install, and replacing it with XP Pro, I had to install the display manager for some of the hotkeys to work; such as brightness. Funnily enough though, I’m not even sure if the Samsung hotkeys application needed to be installed, as certain FN functions, such as volume, mute etc, worked without it.
I plan on uninstalling the Samsung hotkeys application and seeing if the FN functions sill work.
November 21, 2008 at 5:47 pm #168974doomageMemberI have been running Vista business edition (+ office enterprise 2007) for the past 2 weeks with no problems. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and bought a 8GB SD card, half of which is used for readyboost. Installation was done off an ISO on a USB sitck (actually the 8GB SD card with an adaptor). Trickiest part was LAN & wifi drivers. Also, to get the function keys to work, you need to change a BIOS setting (something like ‘allow user change’ – it’s obvious when you see it) – now they work the same as on XP, with the brightness & sound etc. So alll around, pretty awesome with vista.
November 21, 2008 at 6:20 pm #168953TheRingMemberI would say if you are going to use vlite then be carefull, to be honest if your going to put vista on the nc10 its worth putting the lot on there as the drive is big enough. Vlite is usefull for the smaller netbooks with ssds.
The last vlite version i did just remove languages, speech support and help files plus a few small things like dated drivers. After vista updated it got stuck in the configuring update 3 of 3 loop every time vista started so i have reverted back to xp. im sure if i didnt use vlite all would be ok though

[/quote1227292217]thanks for pointing this out. i found the BIOS option in Boot > Brightness Mode Control > User Control, but the brightness function buttons still wouldn’t work for me until i installed Easy Display manager. Normally i’m alergic to all the ‘Manager This’ and ‘Manager That’ software, which Vista manages very well in most cases, but for the sake of brightness control then i can live with it. Easy Display Manager also controls the wifi on/off key, and the other hardware related keys, touchpad on/off etc., in case anyone else is scratching their head wondering those keys won’t work.
on a related note, with “Magic Keyboard” i was getting an application crash on start for Easy Speed Up Manager, which is tied in to the Keyboard programme. The error went away when i set XP compatibility mode on c:program filessamsungmagickbdPerformanceManager.exe. i uninstalled magic keyboard anyway because i couldn’t see what good it did. i still have pinch/zoom gestures via the Synaptics software.
by the way, i can confirm that 2Gb DDR 2 800Mhz ram works great 🙂 and a 64Gb SLC SSD 🙂 i can’t get over how silent the laptop is, there is a tiny whirr off the fan when it’s working hard but it’s barely audible. i also got a bluetooth mouse (microsoft wireless presenter 8000) which works great with the on-board bluetooth, no need for the dongle.
one last tip to anyone installing Vista off a USB drive, make sure it is configured with a MBR and a bootsector. i ran bootsect.exe from the Boot vista installation folder, but it still wouldn’t boot, i got a “Disk Error Press any key to restart” message. i was quite impressed with the BIOS, the boot ordering options are excellent. no need to go fiddling with making a ‘system disk’ DOS style, just make sure it has an active primary partition, with a MBR and boot sector, and the files from the Vista setup disk, bootmgr etc.
Bluetooth dies for me after Vista resumes from Sleep. but that’s my only outstanding issue, so overall, i love the NC10.
November 21, 2008 at 7:21 pm #168976timmer3Memberi’d like to see TPM support in the BIOS to use BitLocker drive encryption, hopefully this will be provided with a bios update.
November 21, 2008 at 7:51 pm #168956dougpMemberanyone get the camera to work in Vista? What driver?
Update: Nevermind, figured it out … just had to install Play Camera.
November 22, 2008 at 11:37 pm #168978NetbookJimMemberHey everyone, I’m glad everyone is enjoying their new nc10s.
I’ve got my copy of Vista up and running but there seem to be a few gottchas. The first is that I can’t use sleep when I close the lid, or the screen doesn’t turn on afterwards and I have to force shutdown. This can be easily resoloved by setting the action to hibernate in the power options though. Still, it does slow things down a bit. Anyone have sleep working or is it just my set up? (I did an upgrade rather than clean install… I wanted to see how many sumsung drivers would work in vista. Unsurprisingly, none as far as I can tell.
Secondly, I was wondering if there was a way to remap the functions like volume and brightness back to the keys. I can’t find the settings to put wifi and bluetooth off (although I’m sure I could) but I would rather remap the keys in vista. I’m going to try and find and run ‘magicKbd.exe’ on the cds that came with it, we’ll have to see if that works…. any suggestions?
Otherwise all good, bluetooth, camera, trackpad, LAN and sound needed the drivers from samsung’s website, otherwise it is working perfectly.
November 23, 2008 at 2:04 am #168957dougpMemberJim, my sleep works on Vista – but I did a fresh install. It could possibly be the drivers for the video card, try updating from the Intel website.
As for functionality remapping – just uninstall magicKBD – it doesn’t do anything. You might want to look into AutoHotKey and learn to script for it, that’ll give you a lot off customization.
November 23, 2008 at 6:25 am #168982SpudboyMemberWould someone mind posting the direct link to the vista intel graphic drivers?
Also, does anyone know where I can purchase an extra internal wifi antenna? Must be looking in the wrong places…
November 23, 2008 at 7:22 am #168958dougpMemberDoesn’t matter which 945 chipset you choose: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-020683.htm

Been running vlited vista for a week now and works a dream as others have mentioned grab the drivers from intels site and the graphics speed along nicely with aero running impressively. Media centre and powerdvd 8 run really well and smooth with no dropouts.Finding the atheros drivers can be a pain but there is an obscure site which has the vista drivers you just gotta search had.
Atheros drivers for vista can be found here (apologise in advance if links are not permitted

Great link for the Vista Drivers, thanks, but am i the only one having problems with the Bluetooth drivers? They don’t work properly. Do i have to use the XP drivers instead?
And is it possible to get the Samsung applications to work properly under Vista?
I also have problems with my FN keys, do i have to use the magic keyboard from the Samsung Site for that?http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDown.do?group=computersperipherals&type=mobilecomputing&subtype=netbook&model_nm=NP-NC10&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=DR&vType=R&prd_ia_cd=05012500&disp_nm=NC10-14GB”]Samsung Drivers
