MemberTo someone out there:
Hello there. I have just ordered my NC10 via Dixons (oh la la 287 pounds!) and I’m quite giddy with excitement. But since I will be using it for work (photography), I wanted to swap the HD to a faster 7200 rpm model. I think it’s going to be the ultimate light weight photography machine after this upgrade (so I would like to believe).
I’m absolutely clueless about Windows as I have been a mac user for quite some time. What I want to know is the following:
1. Does the NC10 come with an actual XP home or is it just a recovery disk?
2. After I swap the HD, can I then connect the NC10 to an external DVD/CD ROM drive and install XP Home with the disk that comes with the NC10? Is there another way to do this?
3. Is blue a great colour or what?
4. Which RAM would you recommend? I’m leaning towards the cheapest one I can find on the web and it’s the Kingston 2GB via Amazon.uk.That’s really it.
I have considered ghosting/cloning the image onto my new drive and putting it back in, but I would like to freshly install XP and get rid of the crap that comes with the factory setting. As for the USB key install, it’s way beyond my technical savvy which doesn’t extend that far and I have a feeling I’m going to screw it up big time and cry like a petite whore.
Any help will be appreciated.
Help….

Participant1) The disk is almost a standard Windows XP Home/ULCPC disk, it will install just like a standard XP install. The second disk contains the drivers, though you may want to consider downloading newer ones from Samsungs site and put them on via a USB stick instead.
2) That will work fine, I have done that with an external USB optical drive. You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS though.
3) Black is better, but then I’m biased. 😛
4) I choose to get mine from Crucial but really it doesn’t matter as long as you get the right type. There is really very little unwanted software bundled with the NC10, McAfee is really the only thing. Remember you will loose the recovery partition and will not be able to use Samsungs backup/recovery software, possibly not a great loss especially as you have an external DVD drive.

MemberThank you so much. It was actually strange going through the forums trying to find an answer to a question that I thought would have been answered by people like me. Alas, this means my lack of knowledge is on par with my mother’s knowledge when it comes to anything with more than 5 buttons.
Thanks again Alfihar!

Welcome ToksuedeYes, there is. Although if you already have an external DVD/CD drive, then the easiest installation route is as you describe.
If you don’t have an external DVD/CD drive and don’t want to buy one, then you can install the OS from a boot USB stick. I’ve done this using WinSetupFromUSB as explained in the following guide:
In trying to triple boot XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu – I had scrambled the boot manager on my brand new Samsung NC10 and could only access 7 and Ubuntu.
By using the System Recovery Media (aka WinXP Home) and the System Software Media (aka drivers) CDs and this excellent guide, I was able to recreate my basic XP system.

MemberThank you.
I was considering buying the Wind to start with, but here in the UK it is overpriced compared to the Advent. Well, it’s not really fair as the 6 cell Wind is the same price as the NC10 at the moment. I was going to do it cheap by getting the Advent 4211 via ebay, but the more I looked at it, the more I became disenchanted with the “only a mother can love” type of looks.
I saw the Samsung by chance at the airport (blue one) and thought, “it looks cool”. After that I started the lengthy search of “which one is better” for a while.
So, I will report back when I get my “Blue” in my hands and do all the necessary updates.
I have already invested in a CF card reader, RAM, faster HD, and a case so I realy hope it will make my life easier. Not too stoked about XP, but I shall give it a try.
Although I’m a bit worried about running certain apps (ie Photo Mechanic), but it sounds like there is a work around.
As for the USB thing, it really sounds way too complicated for me, so maybe in the future I will give it a try.

MemberYou might encounter heat problems with a 7200 rpm HD, if you start getting random reboots and crashes that would be the cause.

ParticipantI don’t think heat will be much of a problem, modern 2.5″ 7200rpm hard drives don’t run much hotter than 5400rpm ones. Not to mention the NC10 runs pretty cool anyway. It shouldn’t affect the processor or northbridge.

MemberYou wont encounter heat problems with the 7200rpm hard drive.
but its not going to make a dramatic difference either.

MemberI’m going to get the Seagate 7200.3 160GB model with G-Force.
I have no idea how much performance gain I can expect compare to the stock HD and I’m not expecting too much. But every little helps in my case. And if I drop it from head height to the floor, I won’t lose any data.
But I will probably lose the NC10.January 31, 2009 at 12:46 pm #181874TCMuffin
