MemberWhen I first installed Ubuntu, my wireless network adapter didn’t work. I solved this using the following install wireless guide.
Great – one happy bunny for about half an hour. Immediately after I installed the Atheros driver, I ran Update Manager (System > Administration > Update Manager), the kernel was updated and the wireless adapter stopped working. Again I used the install wireless guide and my wireless worked for ten days.
Last night I ran Update Manager, my kernel was updated and, guess what, my wireless stopped working again ~:( Rerunning the install wireless guide again sorted out the issue, but it takes about 30 minutes to run the process.
Ubuntu is well aware that it has a problem with loading a non-functional driver for the Atheros WLAN adapter in the NC10 and yet each time the kernel is updated our Sammys’ wireless adapters stop working.
Is anyone else getting the same problem or am I just unlucky?
I don’t want to have to keep reinstalling the wireless adapter every time I update the kernel. So I’m looking to ditch Ubuntu in favour of Fedora 10 which has had really good reviews. Does anyone have any experience of installing Fedora 10 over an Ubuntu distribution?
Many thanks

ParticipantI’ve gone from Ubuntu to Fedora a few times.
I tend to just run the Fedora installer and choose to remove the current Linux partitions and install Fedora in the space.
Fedora comes with a driver which works with the Atheros wireless card, and for me it worked fine. Though I have read comments about it being slow and dropping packets, a newer version supposedly fixes these issues.
Here’s a useful guide for Fedora 10 on the NC10, however I would recommend doing a full update before you start playing around, as updates fix some things like the speakers not muting when you plug in headphones.
I switched my card for an Intel 5300 which makes things a lot easier now.

As always, your advice is clear and relevant.
And very much appreciated by this Linux newbie 🙂

ParticipantHappy to help.
Just checked and the option I use when sorting out the partitions is labelled “Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout”. Remember to backup anything you want to keep first.
If this is your first time using Fedora there are a few useful sites:-
