Pessimissed
MemberThought it’d be worth mentioning this one.
Though it’s currently only in invite-only beta, keep an eye out for Spotify.
It’s a free, legal music streaming application with an enourmous central library of music to listen to on demand. I think all of the major record labels have now signed up to it.
I have an external hard drive with around 300GBs of MP3s hoarded over the years and honestly, since I discovered Spotify, I rarely need to use it anymore.
I suggest it for a netbook because having near-enough the whole world’s music collection with you wherever you go is… pretty cool.
Here’s some more info and praise: http://www.redferret.net/?p=11402
There are plenty of communities online for obtaining Spotify invites at this early stage, or if you don’t mind spending a tenner then you can buy your way in with a Premium account.
Keep an eye on it 🙂
(Disclaimer for idiots: I am no way affiliated with Spotify, I just think it really is this good)

MemberThanks.
I currently use lastfm.com
No need to sign up and no adverts

MemberHonestly, in my humble opinion, Last.FM doesn’t compare.
It’s a proper application like iTunes, allowing playlists and so on. Full discographies available on demand, instant playback as if they were stored locally. Great bitrate too, considering how much there is available. Certainly doesn’t sound streamed.
Worth a proper look before being dismissed as “another music website”, that’s all I’m saying 🙂

Anyway I’ll shutup about it now 🙂 Keep an eye out for it though.

MemberIf anyone has a spare invite, drop me a PM! I’ve been meaning to sign up for ages but have never been quite bothered enough to chase an invite.
Feel free to drop any useful sites etc in on the forum. I’m always interested and there will be some who have not heard of last.fm or spotify I’m sure!
edit: I have an invite thanks Pessimissed! I look forward to trying it out later 🙂

MemberI’m not sure if legality is the issue – it simply doesn’t really compete with the likes of spotify or last in terms of look, feel and functionality.

[/quote1231244377]Oh, at least it’s legal then.
Humm, example, I searched for The Tragically Hip on Goear and found 2 tracks.
I searched for The Tragically Hip on Spotify and found all of their 11 albums and their greatest hits CD, arranged in chronological order with artwork.
Seeerious 😀
Whatever man, stick with your sources, just trying to make people aware of this, that’s all.

MemberNow that I am a member, how do I invite other people?
I was very impressed. Plugged my NC10 into my Hi-Fi and you instantly have every thing you ever wanted to listen too. Unless you like the Beatles in which case you have to settle for Karaoke versions of their hits! The biggest prob was working out what to listen to next! The “radio” player if handy for that.
I wouldn’t want to say it’s better or worse than other music apps, that will be down to personal choice.
