Hi, I’ve just joined here, but I’ve been waited for a via nano-based laptop for ages, and I was hoping anyone who has already gotten their hands on an nc20 could answer some questions on the hardware (some which I don’t think have been asked here already);
Virtualization Extensions; the via nano is supposed to implement intels’ virtualization acceleration extensions, but quite a few “consumer orientated” notebook vendors disable these in the notebook bios/firmware.
I could understand samsung doing so on a netbook, but I’m hoping they left it available…How configurable is the bios, and/or what options are presented there?
I’ve seen one screenshot where you can select something related to memory performance/power usage, but that’s it…I was really hoping for an SSD drive option, but I’m very happy with the samsung spinpoint drives in my desktop, so I was wondering just how loud/audible the samsung disk in the nc20 is?
What chipset is the wifi module (device manager should tell you)?
I know the trackpads’ buttons are combined into one, but I was wondering whether or not both buttons can be pressed simultaneously (it has a very useful functionality under linux/X11)?
While we’re on the subject, anyone booted/running linux on theirs yet?
lspci and/or lshw output would be nice. 😉What “speed” is the ram?
I’ve seen conflicting reports claiming it’s either ddr2 pc5300 667MHz or pc6400 800MHz…
Has anyone upgraded to a 2 gig ram module yet? From what I’ve seen, the cpu seems to be a 1.3 GHz chip overclockable to 1.6GHz.
Is is running at 1.6 GHz as standard?
Can it be underclocked, or how well does frequency scaling work? How warm/hot does the laptop get under normal and heavy (ie cpu maxed out) usage, how often does the fan kick in, and how loud is it?
And finally, anyone seen/encountered any dead pixels on the screens (actually has anyone seen any on the nc10 either)?
I know it’s a bit early to ask all these, and that a lot of people are waiting for the black version anyways (including myself), but I just thought I get the questions out there, and maybe start a little discussion on them.
February 21, 2009 at 11:48 pm #184609SpitMemberHi,
Dont know about the virtualisations.
Bios is basic, just power, date, time and memory stuff.
HDD is virtually silent, no clicking.
Wifi is Atheros AR5007EG,
Unknown regarding double clicking, doesnt do anything in windows.
FSB Ram is running at 800Mhz according to cpuz.
I have 2gb ram in mine 🙂
At max performance power setting the cpu runs at 1.6Ghz, at max battery life it runs at 800Mhz. Not seen any other frequencies or controls to change it.
Laptop gets warmish.
No dead pixels on mine, screen is gorgeous.Hope that helps 🙂

What is the name of the hard drive of NC20 you have? Is it Samsung?
February 22, 2009 at 7:52 am #184608FlowahMemberIS the wifi card user upgradeable to the Intel 5300?
February 22, 2009 at 10:21 am #184610SpitMemberHi Summertan 🙂
It is the HDD that came with the NC20, samsung I suppose, not looked.
I do not know if it can be upgraded.

Thanks Spit, that answers most of my questions.
If it actually “feels” like you can press both mouse buttons, then you probably can (and the single button might actually make “emulate middle click” easier to use).
So frequency scaling is enabled out of the box, nice.
800 MHz is the lowest I’ve heard of any nano cpu going so far.Does the laptop always feel warm, or only when under load?
I ask because the 1.0 GHz nano on mini-itx boards are available with passive cooling, so when idling at 800 MHz is should be fairly cool (although I have read that the frequency scaling on via cpus doesn’t buy you nearly as much as on your typical intel (non-atom) and amd chips, probably because the via chips are designed for efficiency in the first place anyways).
I’d love to know what voltages the chip runs at per frequency, but tbh I wouldn’t even know how to check that myself under windows, so I won’t ask. 😉[quote1235335041=summertan]What is the name of the hard drive of NC20 you have? Is it Samsung?

Not under windows atm, but I think device manager tells you the make (or at least the model number) of any attached hard drives…
Anyways, I’d be rather surprised if it was anything other than a spinpoint m5.

I was actually trying to tell from the video posted in this thread, where the machine is fully opened, but couldn’t make out a mini-pcie card.
I’d be surprised if it was anything else though, especially for wireless (and the fact that the manuals claimed wifi was “optional” suggests it’s some kind of module, rather than integrated).Perhaps it’s tucked away beneath the memory module?
That’s be really handy, as otherwise you’d need to open up the whole machine to get to it rather than just the user-accessible panel on the bottom.Anyways, as Spit reported the wifi chip on his is an AR5007EG, which is commonly used on mini-pcie cards.
Thanks again, Spit, that was really helpfull.
February 23, 2009 at 8:21 pm #184611SpitMemberNo problems.
1.6Ghz runs at 1.052v
800Mhz runs at 0.908vSamsung HM160HI HDD is what device manager reports.

I’d wait until there are responses from a few NC20 owners before celebrating, there’s a good chance that the NC20 may come with one of a selection of hard drives.February 24, 2009 at 1:03 am #184612Ken_BMemberDoes anyone know if the battery is identical to the one on the NC10? I know it’s the same capacity, but would a third party NC10 battery work in the NC20?
