I hooked up the Samsung slim external DVD writer to my NC10. I inserted movie DVDs into the drive. I get a message “Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD deocder is not installed on your computer”. The button choices are Close and Web Help. Web help takes me to a screen to buy software.
Is this telling me the NC10 does not come with software that can play DVD movies? How lame is that?
Am I missing something?
January 1, 2009 at 7:51 pm #178250AlfiharParticipantWindows XP does not come with the ability to play DVD’s, Samsung did not bundle software to play DVD’s with the NC10 as it does not have a DVD drive.
Did the optical drive come with any software?

January 5, 2009 at 7:13 pm #178255wcwMemberI actually tried that. Eight Legged Freaks (ELF) had a player. But it would not complete the install. I forgot what error message it said. Fortunately, it was not needed to play that DVD. After installing the VLC player, I was able to play ELF and all the other DVDs I tried.
January 6, 2009 at 9:01 am #178244jezMemberI think someone else said it before, update to Win media player 11 and it should work? I can watch DVDs in Win Media player on my desktop and I’m pretty sure I’ve never installed anything specifically to do that. Not tried on my NC10 though.

You should try MPC for .VOB files as it works fine for me. Alternatively, you could try PowerDVD. I use it all the time; mainly due to the easy-to-use controls. It isn’t free, but it is well worth acquiring.January 8, 2009 at 9:31 am #178249edjexMemberI use xbmc (Atlantis) http://xbmc.org/about/
It plays everything and works like a charm.January 12, 2009 at 8:21 pm #178258feridounMembertry free-codecs.com and download the k-lite codec pack. check the mpeg2/dvd decoder when installing. also gives you media player classic to play your files.
